Job description

Employment Type: Full-Time

Location: Macon, Georgia

Work Setting: On-site in Macon, with occasional travel throughout Middle Georgia

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Disability Connections is looking for a Communications and Community Engagement Assistant who can turn ideas, accomplishments, and real-life experiences into accessible content that informs, connects, and empowers people.

This is more than a social media position. You will help connect the work happening across our programs, offices, online community, and community partnerships. You will create accessible digital content and multimedia, support outreach and follow-through, help people find useful information, and make sure important stories and accomplishments do not get lost.

We are looking for someone who brings creativity, hard work, initiative, and genuine dedication to the mission. The right person will be a great team player who encourages and empowers staff, people with disabilities, families, veterans, youth, and community partners.

ABOUT DISABILITY CONNECTIONS

Disability Connections works alongside people with disabilities as they pursue independence, community participation, employment, and greater control over their lives.

Our work is grounded in consumer control, respect, accessibility, self-determination, and the dignity of risk. We believe people with disabilities should direct their own goals, services, choices, and stories.

Our workplace is active, creative, collaborative, and mission-driven. Staff members work across programs and communities, support one another, and have opportunities to see the real-world impact of their work.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
Accessible Communications and Multimedia
  • Create accessible content for websites, social media, newsletters, email, presentations, flyers, reports, and other communication channels.
  • Develop graphics, photographs, audio, video, and other multimedia that reflect the organization’s mission and work.
  • Help ensure digital content includes appropriate alternative text, captions, transcripts, readable design, descriptive links, plain language, and other accessibility features.
  • Gather program updates, accomplishments, outreach results, and approved stories from staff across the organization.
  • Assist with maintaining accurate and current information across Disability Connections’ online presence.
  • Help organize photographs, media releases, communication materials, and completed content.
Online Community Engagement
  • Play a pivotal role in developing and supporting the Disability Connections online community.
  • Create and schedule accessible posts, discussions, resources, learning opportunities, events, and community updates.
  • Welcome and encourage online community members while helping create a respectful and accessible environment.
  • Promote peer connection, shared learning, community participation, independent living, and access to reliable resources.
  • Assist with online Spaces, courses, events, and other community activities as they are developed.
  • Help members navigate the community and locate approved information without making program, eligibility, financial, or service decisions.
  • Recognize and refer questions or concerns requiring assistance from program staff or leadership.
  • Protect privacy and honor each person’s control over what they choose to share.
Outreach and Organizational Support
  • Help coordinate communication and outreach activities involving the Main, Dublin, and DC South offices.
  • Maintain communication and outreach calendars and assist with promoting events.
  • Prepare accessible outreach materials and gather information about participation, results, partnerships, and follow-up needs.
  • Help connect the organization’s public communications with its strategic goals and the work taking place across programs.
  • Collect communication and outreach evidence throughout the month to support organizational, grant, board, and annual reporting.
  • Use Slack, Asana, and other approved tools to organize assignments, deadlines, approvals, completed work, and measurable results.
Program Communication and Follow-Through
  • Assist with routine communications involving Veteran Directed Care participants, authorized representatives, and attendant employees.
  • Complete assigned scripted calls, reminders, monthly follow-up contacts, and other approved communication tasks.
  • Support routine communication with people moving from nursing homes or other facilities into community living.
  • Assist with communication and accessible materials for youth exploring community life, independent living, education, and competitive integrated employment.
  • Distribute approved forms, instructions, notices, schedules, and program information.
  • Document contacts and refer programmatic, financial, eligibility, payroll, or service concerns to authorized staff.
  • Avoid interpreting program rules or making eligibility, financial, employment, or service decisions outside the position’s authority.
Teamwork and Consumer Control
  • Work collaboratively with Team Leads, coordinators, expansion-office staff, leadership, and community partners.
  • Encourage and empower staff and community members while respecting their knowledge, responsibilities, and experiences.
  • Seek accurate information from the appropriate staff before publishing program-related content.
  • Support people with disabilities in controlling their choices, goals, services, participation, and personal stories.
  • Obtain appropriate permission before using photographs, interviews, or personal experiences.
  • Respect a person’s decision not to participate or share information—and their right to withdraw permission.
  • Maintain confidentiality when working with people with disabilities, veterans, youth, families, employees, and organizational records.
WHO WILL THRIVE IN THIS POSITION
You may be a strong fit if you:
  • Are creative, dependable, hardworking, and excited about using communication to make a difference.
  • Are a great team player who encourages others and contributes positively to the workplace.
  • Can manage multiple assignments, follow through on details, and meet deadlines.
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully in writing, conversation, and digital formats.
  • Can create or are eager to develop skills in graphics, photography, audio, video, and other multimedia.
  • Understand accessibility or are committed to learning how to create accessible digital content.
  • Are comfortable learning new technology and communication platforms.
  • Can accept feedback, revise your work, and collaborate with subject-matter staff.

  • Respect people with different disabilities, backgrounds, identities, experiences, and communication styles.
  • Believe that people with disabilities should have control over their lives and the dignity to make informed choices and take reasonable risks.

Experience is valued, but practical skills, creativity, lived experience, dedication, and examples of what you can do may matter more than a perfect résumé. A portfolio is welcome but not required.
