Headquartered in Akron, Ohio, FirstEnergy includes one of the nation’s largest investor‑owned electric systems, more than 24,000 miles of transmission lines that connect the Midwest and Mid‑Atlantic regions, and a regulated generating fleet with a total capacity of more than 3,500 megawatts.

Job Description

FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp., is hiring an experienced Field Engineer to provide field engineering services and technical support for the maintenance, construction, testing and commissioning of substation equipment up to 500kV. The role is on a predominately outdoor basis (90%+ outside the office) at Toledo, OH and other substation facilities.

Responsibilities Include
  • Maintaining a safe workplace for coworkers and the community by understanding potential hazards, regulations and company practices.
  • Commissioning new transmission substation equipment prior to release to operations.
  • Developing check‑out guides, reviewing and approving test results and isolation plans, and creating energization plans to minimize system risk.
  • Providing limited field design services to correct minor design problems encountered during substation capital projects.
  • Providing onsite technical support to regional substation services employees during preventive and corrective maintenance activities.
  • Applying engineering skills and operational knowledge to identify and resolve technical problems during installation, testing, and life‑cycle operations, including validating design approaches.
  • Assisting in developing new or modifying existing maintenance practices to address evolving technology and regulatory changes.
  • Auditing preventive and corrective maintenance paperwork and test results for technical adequacy and regulatory completeness.
  • Providing emergency technical support following substation equipment failures to support customer restoration and system reinforcement, including developing field modifications and commissioning mobile substations.
  • Supporting the emergency plan through storm duties and hazard response.
  • Working independently and collaboratively with regional and plant personnel, other departments, and outside vendors.
  • Communicating across multi‑disciplined teams—including electrical contractors, customers, FirstEnergy regional switchmen/technicians, transmission operations, design engineering, planning/protection and project management—to ensure timely project completion.
  • Performing apparent and root‑cause analyses and documenting findings in technical reports and presentations.
  • Educating others on technical subjects and improving technical programs and processes.
  • Supporting the development of corporate programs and policies and assisting in organizational change initiatives.
  • Assisting senior technical staff in developing solutions to complex technical assignments.
  • Supporting FE Utilities Operations and Maintenance staff in meeting goals and deadlines.
  • Producing results that directly and positively impact the company.
  • Consistently anticipating customer needs and delivering high quality results.
  • Willingness to travel throughout the FirstEnergy system, including occasional overnight stays.
Qualifications Include
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited institution is required. Acceptable alternatives: a Professional Engineer’s (PE) license; a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology from an ABET‑accredited institution; or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field from a non‑ABET institution plus an advanced engineering degree from an ABET‑accredited program. Civil Engineering is preferred.
  • A Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certificate is preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of engineering experience.
  • A working knowledge of electrical engineering, transmission substation equipment, transmission system protection and operations.
  • Experience in design, maintenance or testing of substation equipment is strongly considered. Knowledge of microprocessor‑based protection and control equipment is a plus.
  • Experience with SEL products, Enoserve RTS and Doble testing.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to FirstEnergy’s Safety Policies and the Accident Prevention Handbook.
  • Understanding of FirstEnergy’s Manual of Operations.
  • Availability for after‑hours callouts (evenings, weekends, holidays) to provide on‑site technical guidance during emergencies.
  • Leadership by example.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously under pressure.
  • Demonstrated curiosity and willingness to learn, produce results and strengthen relationships.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
