Job summary

Apple Inc. is seeking a Data Center Commissioning Engineer in Prineville, Oregon to anchor field execution for a mission-critical campus.

You will oversee third-party agents, general contractors, and equipment vendors, driving safety, QA/QC, testing, and issue resolution from startup through IST. You will coordinate with Data Center Places, Operations, Engineering, and Commissioning teams to enforce Apple’s playbooks, MOPs, LOTO, and energized work protocols.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Architectural Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related discipline.
• 4+ years of field experience executing or managing commissioning in a hyperscale data center, mission-critical facility, or similar.
• Working knowledge of large-scale electrical delivery systems (UPS, switchgear) and mechanical cooling systems (chilled water, CRAH/CRAC).
• Experience directing Level 3 (Pre-Functional), Level 4 (Functional Testing), and Level 5 (IST) onsite activities.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the primary onsite Apple commissioning representative for a specific data center campus and drive the day-to-day commissioning lifecycle (Levels 1-5).
• Coordinate with Data Center Places, Operations, Engineering, and Commissioning teams to ensure alignment with playbooks and tests.
• Manage onsite subcontractors, general contractors, and vendor field engineers during commissioning.
• Conduct field QA/QC inspections against Basis of Design, drawings, and P&IDs before energization.
• Drive the site commissioning schedule and logistics for testing equipment and readiness.
• Maintain the site issue log (CxAlloy) and drive RCA and timely closure of deficiencies.

The Data Center Commissioning team is seeking a dedicated Data Center Commissioning Engineer to anchor our field efforts at a mission-critical campus. By maintaining day-to-day, firsthand oversight of the job site, you will serve as the program’s direct connection to physical execution. You will closely track daily construction and testing activities in real-time, guaranteeing that all vendor performance strictly adheres to Apple's global commissioning guidelines.

Description

In this role, you will oversee the daily onsite activities of third-party Commissioning Agents (CxA), general contractors, and equipment vendors. You will bridge the gap between global commissioning standards and physical site realities- driving field QA/QC, managing the local testing schedule, enforcing strict safety protocols during live testing, and tracking issue resolution from component startup through Integrated Systems Testing (IST).

Responsibilities

• Serve as the primary onsite Apple commissioning representative for a specific data center campus, driving the day-to-day execution of the commissioning lifecycle (Levels 1-5).
• Partner continuously with the Data Center Places, Operations, Engineering, and Commissioning teams to ensure site-specific execution strictly aligns with Apple's global commissioning playbooks, test procedures, and pass/fail criteria.
• Manage, coordinate, and audit the daily onsite activities of third-party Commissioning Agents (CxA), general contractors, mechanical/electrical subcontractors, and vendor field engineers.
• Conduct regular field walks and QA/QC inspections to verify equipment installation against approved Basis of Design (BOD), MEP-FP drawing packages, Single-Line Diagrams, and P&IDs prior to energization or pressurization.
• Drive the daily site commissioning schedule, coordinating the logistics of load bank deployments, specialized testing equipment, vendor visits, and localized test readiness.
• Manage the site-specific commissioning issue log (using tools like CxAlloy), tracking punch-list items, driving root-cause analysis (RCA) in the field, and ensuring timely resolution of equipment deficiencies.
• Validate field execution of Pre-Functional Testing (PFT) and Functional Performance Testing (FPT) for both mechanical (chillers, CDUs, AHUs) and electrical (UPS, switchgear, generators) systems.
• Enforce strict onsite adherence to Methods of Procedure (MOPs), mechanical Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), and energized electrical work safety protocols during complex switching and live system testing.
• Act as the immediate escalation point for field engineering challenges, working collaboratively with Data Center Engineering (DCE), Data Center Operations (DCO), Data Center construction managers (Places), and third party design engineers to resolve physical integration issues.
• Facilitate a smooth operational turnover process, ensuring field training is completed, O&M documentation is accurate to the physical build, and the local facility operations team is fully prepared to take ownership.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Architectural Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related discipline (or equivalent practical field/job-related experience).
• 4+ years of direct field experience executing or managing commissioning in a Hyperscale data center, mission-critical facility, heavy industrial environment or similar.
• Working knowledge of large-scale electrical delivery systems (e.g., UPS, switchgear, generation) and mechanical cooling systems (e.g., chilled water plants, hydronics, CRAH/CRAC units).
• Experience directing and or overseeing Level 3 (Pre-Functional), Level 4 (Functional Performance Testing), and Level 5 (Integrated Systems Testing) activities onsite.
• Strong ability to read, interpret, and field-verify MEP drawing packages, Single-Line Diagrams, and Sequences of Operation (SOO).
• Experience managing onsite vendors, contractors, or specialized testing firms.
• Ability to work onsite daily at the assigned data center location.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience operating as a dedicated onsite Cx Engineer or Resident Engineer for a major data center build or campus expansion.
• Industry-recognized commissioning certifications such as Certified Commissioning Authority (CxA), Certified Commissioning Professional (CCP), or Building Commissioning Professional (BCxP).
• Hands-on experience with commissioning management software platforms (such as CxAlloy, Facility Grid, or similar tools) for daily field tracking and issue management.
• Practical field experience troubleshooting Building Automation Systems (BAS), Direct Digital Control (DDC), and Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS).
• Strong understanding of field safety standards (OSHA/NFPA 70E), MOP execution, and hazardous energy control.
• Demonstrated track record of identifying field coordination clashes, resolving complex physical engineering challenges, and driving continuous improvement feedback to global engineering teams.
• Proficiency with AI tools to enhance daily work - including AI-assisted summarization of field reports, automated parsing of submittals, and tracking punch-list data.
