Job summary

POWERX Edge in Dallas, TX is seeking a Commissioning Engineer I to support engineering teams and execute commissioning of data center and substation equipment, including protection and control systems, generators, and UPS.

This entry‑level role requires a bachelor’s degree (preferred) and at least 2 years of hands-on commissioning experience in data centers. Travel nationwide is expected; you will create test procedures, maintain logs, and contribute to final project reports and compliance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree preferred in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, or related field.
  • 2 years of hands-on commissioning experience in data centers is expected.
  • Knowledge of NEC/ electrical safety practices; OSHA 10 certification a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in commissioning electrical/mechanical systems and equipment (power distribution, control, backup power).
  • Create and perform test procedures for electrical/mechanical equipment.
  • Document test results and prepare detailed reports.
  • Maintain accurate commissioning records, logs, and installation documentation.
  • Support safety and compliance with regulations and client specifications.
  • Collaborate with project managers and senior engineers to ensure project success.

Job Summary:

The Commissioning Engineer I is responsible for supporting engineering teams and the execution of commissioning activities, including site inspections, equipment testing, and documentation. This role will be assisting all basic activities associated with the installation and commissioning of data center and substation equipment, such as protection and control systems, generators, UPS systems, and all other similar equipment for which commissioning work is typically required. The Commissioning Engineer I plays a key role in ensuring that electrical/mechanical systems are safe, efficient, and meet quality standards.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • None.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Commissioning Support
  • Assist in the commissioning of electrical/mechanical systems and equipment, including power distribution systems, control systems, and backup power systems.
  • Assist with conducting site observations and preparing field reports on the status of projects with respect to compliance.
  • Implement the use of appropriate barriers to prevent unnecessary outages while working in substations or on any type of energized equipment.
  • Review drawings and submittals to ensure compliance with design specifications and project requirements.
Commissioning and Validation
  • Create and perform test procedures for electrical/mechanical equipment to ensure proper operation.
  • Assist in the development and execution of test procedures and protocols.
  • Document test results and provide detailed reports on the findings.
Troubleshooting and Problem Resolution
  • Prepare punch list reports and determine corrective measures to on-site problems.
  • Identify customer needs and resolve or elevate issues/needs to appropriate parties.
  • Investigate commissioning problems and implement solutions to resolve identified issues.
  • Work with senior engineers to develop and implement solutions to resolve any identified issues.
Documentation and Reporting
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of commissioning activities, including test results, equipment logs, and inspection reports.
  • Prepare commissioning documentation and contribute to the preparation of final project reports.
  • Provide daily reports of equipment testing performed each day onsite
Safety and Compliance
  • Adhere to all safety regulations and procedures while performing commissioning activities.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, codes, and client specifications.
  • Support the safety culture and ensure safe working conditions.
Collaboration and Communication
  • Work closely with project managers, senior engineers, and other team members to ensure successful project execution.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, contractors, and other stakeholders to provide updates on commissioning activities.
  • Monitor performance of vendors, contractors, and other third parties.

Additional responsibilities and tasks as required to support the organization’s goals and adapt to evolving business needs.

Attributes/Abilities:
  • Must have a satisfactory background/MVR check.
  • Must pass a pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, and/or random drug test.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical/mechanical systems, equipment, and testing procedures.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to multi-task and effectively manage time in a dynamic environment while maintaining flexibility under changing demands.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and interpret electrical/mechanical blueprints and schematics.
  • Capable of effectively presenting information and responding to questions from diverse groups with varying levels of technical expertise.
Experience and Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, or a related field preferred.
  • 2 years of hands‑on commissioning experience in data centers,
  • Ability to obtain an OSHA 10 certification.
  • Knowledge of the National Electric Code (NEC) and OSHA Electrical Safe Work Practices.
  • Knowledge of use, limitations, and maintenance of all Personal Protective Equipment.
Physical Requirements:
  • Combination of office and field work environment with frequent travel to project sites (throughout the United States); must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and must be insurable.
  • May require working in various environmental conditions, including construction sites, operational facilities, and energized equipment up to 136kV
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability and willingness to work occasional overtime as needed.
  • Potential low exposure to various conditions, including dirt, heat, fumes, smoke, water, noise, vibration, grease, oil, and dust.
