Job summary

An integrated design firm is seeking a Commissioning Authority to support commissioning activities for high-profile projects. This role requires extensive travel (30–50% of the time) and a minimum of 7 years of commissioning experience. About The Smart Buildings Team at DLR Group

This ensures projects are delivered at peak performance on Day One of operations, and are equipped for long‑term efficiency and success.

We focus the Commissioning process to be the formal framework for delivering low‑carbon, high‑performance designs that elevate the human experience and deliver real value for building owners by prioritizing operational efficiency, occupant health and resilience.

Position Summary

In this position, you will be supporting commissioning activities for multiple high‑profile, national and international Commissioning projects across DLR Group’s core sectors including Workplace, Federal, Education, Hospitality, Healthcare, Justice & Civic, Mixed‑Use and more. You will work with these integrated design teams of Architects, Engineers and specialty designers, providing commissioning expertise.

As a Commissioning Authority, you will frequently travel to job sites to perform construction reviews, functional testing, and building performance diagnostics. Expect to be traveling approximately 30–50% of your time in a typical month. In this role there is potential for rapid growth opportunities as we expand our Smart Buildings team.

The Successful Candidate Will
  • Review design and construction documents for compliance with Owner’s Project Requirements and Basis of Design
  • Develop commissioning plans, specifications, pre‑functional checklists, and functional performance tests
  • Perform site inspections and functional testing to verify system installation and operations
  • Collaborate with contractors, owners, occupants, and operators to identify improvements on building operations
  • Identify, track, and resolve issues impacting system performance
  • Provide feedback to design teams to ensure optimal design strategies
Required Qualifications
  • +7 years of hands‑on experience in commissioning building systems
  • Strong knowledge of the building design and construction industry, with familiarity in the commissioning process for new construction, major renovations, and existing buildings
  • Understanding of energy use, indoor environmental quality, operations, and maintenance in building commissioning
  • Familiarity with MEP and building automation systems, with the ability to evaluate and test system performance
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, along with strong organizational and computer skills
  • Possess a sense of self‑direction and the ability to manage your own time
  • Must be able to climb structures and inspect equipment both at high altitudes and in confined spaces
Preferred Qualifications
  • Commissioning certification from a recognized body (ACG, BCA, or ASHRAE)
  • Licensed Professional Engineer or Trade Worker
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field

Compensation considerations are based on location, experience, and skills. The suggested pay range for this position is:

  • $84,700 - $144,430 USD
