Job summary

Brewer-Garrett in Ohio is seeking a Commissioning Agent to lead third-party commissioning on construction projects, ensuring systems are designed, installed, tested, and operated to project requirements.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Commissioning Agent is responsible for executing third-party commissioning activities across assigned construction projects. This role serves as an independent representative of the company, ensuring that building systems are designed, installed, tested, and operating in accordance with project requirements and industry standards.

The Commissioning Agent will lead site visits, inspections, system testing, and documentation while collaborating with project stakeholders to ensure quality, performance, and compliance throughout the construction lifecycle.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Commissioning Execution

  • Lead and manage all commissioning activities for assigned projects.
  • Organize and coordinate commissioning efforts in alignment with project schedules.
  • Schedule and perform site visits; communicate scheduling needs with Commissioning leadership.
  • Conduct inspections, system testing, and performance verification of building systems.
  • Perform ongoing coordination checks to ensure quality and adherence to construction standards.
  • Maintain familiarity with project scope, engineering strategies, and construction objectives.

Technical Review & Quality Assurance

  • Review drawings, specifications, and calculations to identify errors, omissions, or improvement opportunities.
  • Provide recommendations to architects, engineers, and project teams.
  • Apply engineering principles, mathematics, and building systems knowledge to evaluate performance.
  • Ensure systems meet design intent and operational requirements.

Project Coordination & Communication

  • Develop and maintain strong, professional relationships with clients, contractors, architects & engineers, and/or building occupants and stakeholders
  • Participate in project meetings; coordinate and lead meetings as assigned.
  • Collaborate with construction teams to support project timelines and budgets.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Prepare and deliver:
    • Monthly status reports
    • First and Final Commissioning Reports
  • Maintain complete and accurate project documentation in CxPlanner.
  • Support organization and maintenance of project files and records.
  • Ensure all deliverables are completed within established timelines and quality standards.

Program Support

  • Assist in the development and continuous improvement of commissioning standards.
  • Support development of the Ohio Maintenance Business Plan for applicable state-funded projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred.
  • Relevant experience in commissioning, construction, or building systems required.
  • Ability to obtain a commissioning certification such as BCA, CBCP, LEED, or Energy Star
  • Strong technical aptitude in mechanical/electrical systems preferred.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to job sites.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
  • Strong understanding of building systems (HVAC, electrical, controls, etc.).
  • Knowledge of commissioning processes, construction practices, and engineering principles.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to lead meetings and coordinate with cross-functional project teams.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency in documentation systems and software tools (CxPlanner or similar preferred).
  • Professional demeanor with strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
WORKING CONDITIONS:

This position operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This position requires regular travel by car to perform the required functions. Travel by airplane may be occasionally required.
