Responsibilities

  • Inspect, test, start up, troubleshoot, and commission LV/MV systems.
  • Commission switchgear, transformers, breakers, generators, transfer switches, meters, relays, and load banks.
  • Perform point-to-point checks, insulation testing, phase verification, and control-circuit testing.
  • Verify installation, grounding, torque, labeling, wiring, and terminations.
  • Test alarms, interlocks, trip circuits, controls, and sequences of operation.
  • Coordinate with engineers, electricians, manufacturers, project teams, and customers to resolve deficiencies.
  • Maintain commissioning checklists and closeout documentation.

Job Summary

The Electrical Commissioning Technician is responsible for inspecting, testing, starting up, troubleshooting, and commissioning low- and medium-voltage electrical equipment and power distribution systems.

This position supports installation verification, pre-functional testing, point-to-point checks, functional performance testing, energization, deficiency resolution, and final project turnover. Extensive travel, overtime, weekend work, and overnight stays may be required.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Inspect, test, start up, troubleshoot, and commission low- and medium-voltage electrical systems.
  • Commission switchgear, circuit breakers, transformers, generator controls, transfer switches, power meters, protective relays, and load banks.
  • Perform point-to-point checks, continuity testing, insulation resistance testing, phase verification, and control-circuit testing.
  • Verify equipment installation, grounding, torque, labeling, wiring, and terminations.
  • Test alarms, interlocks, trip circuits, controls, communication points, and sequences of operation.
  • Support energization, emergency power testing, transfer testing, and integrated systems testing.
  • Read and interpret one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment manuals, and technical specifications.
  • Identify and troubleshoot equipment, wiring, programming, and installation deficiencies.
  • Maintain commissioning checklists, test reports, deficiency logs, daily reports, and closeout documentation.
  • Coordinate with engineers, electricians, manufacturers, project teams, and customers to resolve deficiencies.
  • Follow all company, customer, and site-specific safety procedures.
Required Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of electrical commissioning, startup, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with low- and medium-voltage switchgear, transformers, breakers, generators, transfer switches, and control systems.
  • Ability to use multimeters, insulation resistance testers, ammeters, phase-rotation meters, and other electrical testing equipment.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, control drawings, and sequences of operation.
  • Knowledge of control wiring, alarms, interlocks, trip circuits, protective relays, and power-system controls.
  • Strong troubleshooting, documentation, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a field commissioning team.
  • Willingness to travel extensively and work overtime, weekends, and overnight assignments.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Technical training or electrical apprenticeship preferred.
  • Three or more years of electrical industry experience.
  • Three or more years of hands‑on experience testing or commissioning low- and medium-voltage electrical equipment.
  • Valid driver’s license.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, bend, climb, crouch, and work in confined areas.
  • Ability to work around energized equipment, loud machinery, construction activities, and changing weather conditions.
  • Ability to work at heights and navigate ladders, uneven surfaces, equipment rooms, and elevated platforms.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment and follow electrical safety procedures.
