Job summary

Qualifications

• Education - High School Diploma/equivalent.
• Experience - A minimum of one (1) year experience in work involving customer interaction, clerical, mechanical or moderately technical work.
• Substitution Note - 1 year of education may be substituted for each year of experience.
• Licensure and/or Certification - Must possess a valid driver license and maintain certifications including North American Roadside Inspection, Hazardous Material Inspection, Bulk Packaging Inspection, Motor Coach Inspection and related training.
• Vehicle Inspection - Knowledge of basic principles of commercial vehicle technology and inspection procedures.
• Regulatory Knowledge - Working knowledge of TXDPS, State and Federal regulations, guidelines, policies and procedures.
• Technology - Proficiency with Microsoft Office and CAPPS/SharePoint and ability to learn new software.
• Interpersonal Skills - Ability to maintain professional relationships with internal/external customers and demonstrate DPS core values.
• Schedule - Availability for after-hours and weekend work is required.

Responsibilities

• Conduct safety inspections of commercial motor vehicles per federal regulations and State law.
• Document deficiencies and place subjects into Out of Service status per guidelines.
• Prepare notices to appear/cautions for violations of safety regulations.
• Examine permits, licenses and registrations for compliance.
• Compose and complete reports, vouchers and related documents as needed.
• Maintain effective working relationships with carriers, operators, DPS staff and the public.
• Assist local/state law enforcement on investigations related to carrier operations.
• May refer carriers for compliance reviews and testify at hearings when required.
• Attend work regularly and observe approved hours.
