Summary

The Commercial Relationship Manager is an intermediate‑level commercial banking position focused on business development, portfolio management, and credit functions. The role drives shareholder value by generating quality earnings through interest income growth, maintaining margin and credit quality, and supporting non‑interest income through collaboration with business partners. The manager maintains an average loan portfolio of $20‑$50million, serves at least 50 bank relationships, and generates a minimum of $1.1million in revenue.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Achieve individual annual production and growth goals for loans, deposits, and fees to meet the bank’s financial targets and credit terms.
  • Initiate and develop new business through external business development activities.
  • Maintain ongoing contact with new clients to enhance their experience with First Interstate Bank.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of clients’ needs based on relationship reviews, financial data, and personal meetings.
  • Use internal customer‑sourcing software to generate leads, track activities, and refer prospects to appropriate business partners and bankers.
  • Participate in community organizations to source business‑development opportunities and demonstrate the bank’s commitment to the community.
  • Build a referral pipeline by identifying and developing internal and external centers of influence.
  • Maintain an in‑depth knowledge of products, services, competitors, and market conditions.
  • Proactively promote bank products and services, keeping clients informed of all financial solutions.
  • Assemble cross‑functional teams to respond to customer requests and recognize opportunities for cross‑sell.
  • Analyze credit to determine client qualification for borrowing requirements.
  • Assume ultimate accountability for portfolio activities, ensuring sound asset quality through underwriting, structuring, and risk assessment.
  • Maintain follow‑up on existing loans to ensure compliance with internal procedures and required terms.
  • Research and study industrial, commercial, economic, and financial situations relating to existing and new business.
  • Maintain compliance with all bank regulations, policies, procedures, and complete required annual training.
  • Engage in and foster the bank’s Mission, Vision, and Values by executing the Service Commitments.
Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Advanced credit analysis and commercial underwriting skills, including accounting, financial statement analysis, and cash‑flow analysis.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial lending policies, procedures, practices, and documentation.
  • Understanding of the bank’s risk‑rating system, credit products, and underwriting policies; ability to structure credit products for small and medium‑sized businesses across diverse industries.
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills with strong presentation ability.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals and teams across the organization.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Initiative, sound judgment, and ability to prioritize tasks under pressure.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports and legal documents.
  • Ability to respond effectively to inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or business community members.
  • Mathematical ability, including probability, statistics, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, or related field.
  • 4‑6years of experience in commercial lending, commercial credit underwriting, or related combination of education and experience.
Physical Demands and Working Environment

Typical work involves frequent sitting with occasional standing, moderate noise level, and required travel as needed. Regular and predictable attendance (Monday‑Friday, 8a.m.‑5p.m.) is required.
