Job summary

MEC General Contractors in Melbourne, FL is seeking a motivated accounting intern to join our Finance & Accounting team. You’ll gain hands-on exposure to construction-industry accounting, including GAAP nuances, while working with CPAs and finance leaders on real, live close processes.

This internship offers genuine responsibilities beyond clerical tasks, with mentorship from our VP of Finance and exposure to how a $250M+ contractor runs its finance function using modern tools like Sage Intacct,

Qualifications

• Pursuing an Accounting/Finance degree (Bachelor's or Master's).
• Strong Excel skills and attention to detail required.
• Interest in construction accounting is a plus but not mandatory.

Responsibilities

• Assist with monthly close processes and reconciliations.
• Support WIP scheduling and analysis under percentage-of-completion.
• Track subcontractor and owner change orders across active projects.
• Assist with accounts payable review and expense coding accuracy.
• Support ad hoc reporting using Sage Intacct and Procore.
• Learn how data flows from field to GL and payroll systems.
• Participate in process improvement and automation initiatives.

The Role

We're looking for a motivated accounting student to join our Finance & Accounting team as an intern. You'll get hands-on exposure to construction-industry accounting, a specialized niche within GAAP that most students never see in the classroom, while working alongside CPAs and finance leaders on live, real-world work.
This isn't a "make copies and get coffee" internship. You'll be doing real analysis with real data, with direct mentorship from our VP of Finance and accounting team.

What You'll Work On

• Assist with monthly financial close processes, including account reconciliations and journal entry support
• Support Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedule preparation and analysis under the percentage-of-completion method
• Help track and reconcile subcontractor change orders and owner change orders (COs) across active projects
• Assist with accounts payable review, vendor documentation, and expense coding accuracy
• Support ad hoc financial reporting and data analysis using Sage Intacct and Procore
• Learn how construction financial data flows from the field (Procore) into the general ledger (Sage Intacct) and payroll/HR system (UKG)
• Participate in special projects, including process improvement and reporting automation initiatives

What We're Looking For

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (Sophomore standing or above preferred)
• Strong Excel skills; comfort working with data and numbers in detail
• Interest in construction, real estate, or project-based accounting a plus, but not required
• Detail-oriented, organized, and eager to learn
• Strong communication skills and a willingness to ask questions
• Ability to work on-site in Melbourne, FL
