Job summary

CFD Research Corporation is seeking a CFD Developer/Analyst specializing in combustion to advance chemical kinetic modeling for large-scale CFD simulations. You will support the Aerospace and Defense Solutions Division on NASA and DoW programs, performing applied modeling and presenting results from reacting-flow analyses.

The role requires strong C++/Python skills, Cantera/Chemkin experience, and the ability to work both independently and in teams across multiple projects.

Qualifications

  • MS/PhD in Aerospace, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering or similar.
  • Experience simulating reacting flow with Cantera, Chemkin, or similar.
  • 2+ years CFD model development or numerical methods (graduate work included).
  • Strong analytical problem-solving and creative software design.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and apply advanced chemical kinetic modeling for large-scale CFD simulations of combustion.
  • Support R&D programs for NASA and DoW within the Aerospace and Defense Solutions Division.

Job Description:

CFD Research has an immediate opening for a talented Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Developer/Analyst specializing in combustion. This individual will support the development of advanced chemical kinetic modeling approaches for large-scale CFD simulations of combustion applications. This individual will work as part of the Aerospace and Defense Solutions Division supporting R&D programs for NASA and DoW. Other responsibilities will include applied modeling and simulation of reacting flows, including analysis and presentation of results.

Basic Qualifications:
  • MS/PhD degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering, or similar discipline.
  • Experience simulating reacting flow with Cantera, Chemkin, or similar.
  • 2 or more years of experience in development of CFD models or advanced numerical methods (graduate work included).
  • Strong analytical problem-solving skills with the ability to devise creative software design solutions.
  • Proficiency with C++, Python, and shell languages.
  • Working knowledge of software development best practices, including version control via Git.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects as needed.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in team environments.
  • Good communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Good proactive communication (oral, written, presentation), interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to successfully complete assigned tasks with general supervision and oversight.
  • Ambitious, hardworking, and driven towards continuous growth.
  • Candidate must be a U.S. Citizen and meet eligibility to obtain/maintain a Security Clearance.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Detailed knowledge of combustion modeling approaches for CFD applications, including implicit time integration, operator-splitting, mechanism reduction, and flamelet approaches.
  • Familiarity with numerical optimization and calibration approaches, especially in regards to chemical mechanism development.
  • Experience with advanced combustor concepts such as scramjets or rotating detonation engines.
  • Knowledge of advanced fluid models, such as non-equilibrium thermochemistry for hypersonic flows or real fluid equations of state and sharp-interface methods for multi-phase flow.
  • Familiarity with Finite-Volume and Discontinuous-Galerkin approaches.
  • Experience with mesh generation software such as ANSA, Pointwise, STAR-CCM+, or ICEM CFD.
