Job description

Utilize advanced core competencies of thermal and fluid sciences in the specialized areas of combustion and emissions science to answer key questions about the performance and architecture of a system or component. Utilize extensive knowledge of Combustion and Emissions Science to interpret and predict the performance of combustion systems by leveraging a quantitative and intuitive comprehension of the conversion of chemical energy to heat by reacting a fuel with an oxidizer, the formation of exhaust pollutants, modeling tools, controls, and experimental tools to answer key questions about the system or component. Lead processes including Value Package Introduction (VPI), Value Package Change (VPC), Engineering Standard Work (ESW), emissions data system, hardware-in-the-loop testing and tools related to thermal and fluid sciences such as GT-Power, Fluent, Converge, and Concerto to support the processes and enable high quality decision making. Interpret and predict the performance of energy conversion systems such as IC engines, gas turbines, fuel cells, and batteries. Solve system and product issues by using the 7-Step Product Problem Solving Process to determine assignable cause, implement robust, data-based solutions, and identify system root causes in order to recommend actions to prevent problem reoccurrence. Translate stakeholder needs into verifiable requirements to which designs are developed through extensive use of Systems Requirements Engineering. Establish acceptance criteria for the system of interest through analysis, allocation and negotiation, and track the status of requirements throughout the system lifecycle. Define system of interest by drawing boundaries, identifying its context within its environment, its interfaces, and that it has a lifecycle to aid in planning the problem statement, scope and deliverables. Participate in Systems Thinking in order to predict system behavior and devise modifications in order to produce the desired effects.

Positions require a Master’s degree in Mechanical, Automotive or Systems Engineering, or related field and 3 years of experience as a Thermal and Fluid Science, Mechanical, Combustion, Systems or Emissions Engineer, or related position. Alternatively, the employer will accept a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Automotive or Systems Engineering, or related field and 5 years of experience as a Thermal and Fluid Science, Mechanical, Combustion, Systems or Emissions Engineer, or related position. Experience to include: Thermal and fluid sciences; Combustion and Emissions Science; Value Package Introduction (VPI); Value Package Change (VPC); Engineering Standard Work (ESW); Hardware-in-the-loop testing; GT-Power and Concerto; Energy conversion systems; 7-Step Product Problem Solving Process; Systems Requirements Engineering; Systems Thinking to predict system behavior.
