Job summary

Gulf Copper in Port Arthur, TX seeks a Combo Pipe/Plate Struct Welder to join our marine and industrial fabrication team. The role focuses on welding plates and pipes, reading blueprints, and performing repairs with SMAW, FCAW, GTAW or related processes.

The candidate will operate diverse welding equipment, work in flat, vertical, or overhead positions, and follow strict safety protocols in open-air and offshore environments.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; ABS/ASME weld test required.
  • Experience with SMAW and FCAW welding processes preferred.
  • Able to read blueprints and technical manuals.
  • Ability to work under deadlines and maintain safety standards.
  • Able to work in open-air and industrial offshore environments.

Responsibilities

  • Welds steel plates and pipes per procedures.
  • Selects and sets up welding equipment for planned welds.
  • Welds in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
  • Repairs broken parts and fills holes in metal components.
  • Reads blueprints, sketches, drawings, and manuals to guide welding.
  • Operates gas torches and welding equipment; uses various process types.
  • Works on inland and offshore barges in industrial settings.

Job description

Combo Pipe/Plate Struct Welder
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

This positionis responsible forthe following: Other duties may be assigned.

  1. A weldermust understand welding procedures andparameters.

  1. Cancomprehendand utilize blueprints, sketches, drawings, and technical.Manuals,gouge,and work process instruction.

  1. Welds steel plates andpipesin the repair and/or construction of marine vessels, industrial components,and associated equipment.

  1. Have the skills to usevarious typesof welding equipment fordifferent typesof metal.

  1. Welds components in a flat, vertical, or overheadposition.

  1. Performs related tasks such as cutting and grinding.

  1. Repairs broken or cracked parts,fillsholes, and increasesthe sizeof metal parts.

  1. Weldsmetal parts together using gas welding,brazing,arcwelding, wire fedwelding, or tigwelding process and procedures.

  1. Highly skilled weldersoften aretrained to work with a wide variety of materials, such as titanium, aluminum,or exotic metals, in addition to steel.

  1. Select and set up welding equipment, execute the planned welds, and examine the welds to ensure that they meet standards or specifications.

Required Education & Experience:
  1. High School Diploma,some collegeor technical school certification,six months to oneyear(s)experienceor equivalent combination of education and experience.

  1. Must pass an ABS, or ASME weld test.

Working Conditions:
  1. Open-air conditions such as noisy, hot, cold, etc.

  1. Must be able to stand andoperateequipment forup to fourcontinuoushours.

  1. You mustwear hearing, eye,headprotectionand proper PPE.

  1. Some climbing(100 feet or higher) and lifting (50 lbs.) involved.

  1. Working with hot and sometimes hazardous materials.

  1. Work on inland and offshore bargesor in industrialsettings.

  1. Enter roundmanholeswith inside diameters of 18”, and other internally confined spaces.

  1. Traverse gangways and scaffolding at varying heights.

Necessary Equipment Operation:
  1. Blow torches- Motorized cutting torches; Pattern cutting torches; Weldingtorches.

  1. Gas welding, brazing, or cutting apparatus- Brazing equipment;Heliarcwelding equipment; Oxyacetylene equipment; Portable gasoperatedarc welders.

  1. Manlift or personnel lift- hydraulic truck lifts; Swing stages

  1. Weldingmasks- Hand shields; Weldingshields.

Special Skills:
  1. Ability to work under deadlines and schedule pressures.

  1. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches,drawings,and technical manuals.

  1. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  1. High performance anda strongteam player.

Welder Position Basic Requirements:

Qualifications of class – Class will be based upon judgment by quality control and/or production management in terms of the quality and productivity of the welds.

Plate Welder 2ndClass(PLW2) - Welder capable of welding SMAW or FCAW on plate/structural with ABS Q2+4G or ASME or AWS plate test(2G+3G+4G).

Plate Welder 1stClass(PLW1) - Welder capable of welding SMAW & FCAW on plate/structural with ABS Q2+4G or ASME or AWS plate test (2G+3G+4G).

Pipe Welder 2ndClass(PPW2) – Welder capable of welding SMAW or FCAW on plate/structural &SMAW or FCAW on pipe with ABS Q3 or AWS 6g pipe test.

Pipe Welder 1stClass(PPW1)– Welder capable of welding SMAW & FCAW and orGTAW onpipe. Must Pass ABS Q3 or ASME 6G or AWS 6G pipe test.

Combination Welder1stClass- Pipe/Plate/Structural(PPLW)– Welder capable ofprocess /structural pipe and plate welding using GTAW+FCAW and or GTAW+SMAW.

Combination Welder 2ndClass- Pipe/Plate/Structural(PPLW)– Welder capable ofprocess /structural pipe and plate welding using GTAW+FCAW and or GTAW+SMAW.
