Job summary

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum 3 years as a phlebotomist; certification required within 6 months of hire.
• Experience in customer service or patient care.
• Clinical laboratory experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Facilitate collection, processing and shipping of urine specimens and collect urine, blood, and other specimens.
• Properly identify patients and follow collection procedures.
• Enter outpatient orders into the Laboratory Information System.
• Register patients with demographic, insurance/financial, and clinical data in the LIS.
• Process and prepare specimens, maintaining sample integrity for testing.
• Facilitate drug screens according to protocol.
• Assess and order phlebotomy supplies.
• Handle, package, and ship specimens to reference laboratories.
• Process all laboratory specimens and prepare samples for transport to testing departments.
• Follow HIPAA and OSHA standards; maintain clean work areas.
• Demonstrate customer service and compassion in interactions with patients and staff.

Supervision: This position receives direction and supervision from department coordinator/supervisor, department manager and director of operations.

Description: A Specimen Processor/Phlebotomist demonstrates the ability to perform phlebotomy, and a variety of technical and clerical functions based on the needs of the individual client. Position handles blood, urine and other body fluids. Specimens may be contaminated with infectious diseases including HIV and other blood borne pathogens.

Essential Functions:

• Facilitate the collection, processing and shipping of urine specimens and collect urine, blood, and other specimens from patients
• Properly identify patients and follow procedures for collection of specimens.
• Enter outpatient orders into the Laboratory Information System.
• Register patients, recording demographic, insurance/financial, and clinical data into the Laboratory Information System.
• Process and prepare specimens, maintaining proper specimen identification and sample integrity for testing in various laboratory sections.
• Facilitate drug screens according to protocol.
• Assess and order phlebotomy supplies.
• Handle, package, and ship special cases to reference laboratories.
• Process all laboratory specimens, centrifuge samples, and prepare samples for transport to appropriate departments for testing.
• Separate and create manifests for main campus and reference laboratory testing.
• Perform other related functions as assigned.
• Follow universal precautions and all OSHA standards when handling specimens
• Strictly adhere to HIPAA guidelines
• Maintain neat, clean, orderly patient/work areas
• Demonstrate customer service and compassion when interacting with patients, physicians, and facility staff. Work cooperatively with others and address customer service needs.
• Other duties as assigned

Requirements

Education and Experience:

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum 3 years of experience as a phlebotomist required (Phlebotomy certification required upon hire or within 6 months of hire)
• Prior experience in a customer service or patient care environment.
• Must have previous experience in a laboratory (clinical) setting.

Working Conditions:

• Comfortable handling biological specimens (including wearing PPE, personal protective equipment).
• Ability to accurately identify specimens and knowledge and training of HIPPA.
• Experience working in a team environment.
• Strong data entry and organizational skills.
• High level of attention to detail.
• Proficient in Microsoft office suite.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to lift to 40 pounds.
