Typical Schedule

7:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Monday through Thursday

Every Other Friday

7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Plus Every Other Friday Off!

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position requires flexibility and commitment to public service. Employees may be required to:

  • Work rotating shifts
  • Work off-hour shifts (9:30 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.)
  • Work weekends and holidays
  • Perform standby duty assignments
  • Respond to emergency situations
VETERANS PREFERENCE

Veterans may be eligible to receive five (5) Veteran's Preference Points for entrance into Civil Service.

Collection System Operator performs a variety of collection system construction, maintenance, video inspection and customer services work; as experience is gained incumbents plan, assign, and review the work of crews engaged in collection system activities work; performs related work as assigned.

These lists may be used to fill future vacancies.

Prior to appointment, eligible candidates will be required to submit to and successfully pass a medical examination to include drug screen and back evaluation and a background investigation, which will include fingerprinting.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

Entry level

Initially, under close supervision, incumbents perform a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of sanitary and storm collection systems.

Qualifications
Education/Experience:

Possession of a high school diploma or GED AND one (1) year of work experience in sewer construction or maintenance work.

Other Requirements
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class C California driver's license.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Class A California driver's license within one year from date of hire.
  • Must possess strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds and to perform sustained physical labor.
  • Must be willing to work out-of-doors in all weather conditions and to work with exposure to unpleasant and hazardous materials, chemicals and gases, in confined spaces, wearing self-contained breathing equipment; heavy traffic and other hazards.
  • Must be willing to work overtime and off-hour shifts in emergency situations.
  • Must be willing to work with the constituents and odors associated with wastewater.
The Examination

Applicants who qualify in terms of relevant work experience and education, that best fit the needs of the City will be invited to participate in the examination process. The examination process may include a written examination weighted 100%. However, the City reserves the right to utilize alternative testing methods if deemed necessary. Candidates must receive a minimum passing score of 70%, as determined by the relative performance of all candidates in all portions of the examination. In the event of identical ratings, candidates' names will be arranged in order of application date/time, and, if the same, then arranged alphabetically.

The City of Stockton requires employees in this position to reasonably respond to emergencies at all times. Employees are required to maintain primary residence within 45 minutes of City Hall in order to timely respond to emergencies and meet the health, safety, and welfare needs of the City. New employees will have three months from their date of hire to comply with the requirement. Employees within this classification are designated as a "key responder." Designated on-call emergency personnel are expected to adhere to the residency requirement policy of the City of Stockton which states they must reside within a geographic area from City Hall which can be reached in forty-five (45) minutes.
