Collection System Operator performs a variety of collection system construction, maintenance, video inspection and customer services work; as experience is gained incumbents plan, assign, and review the work of crews engaged in collection system activities work; performs related work as assigned.

Prior to appointment, eligible candidates will be required to submit to and successfully pass a medical examination to include drug screen and back evaluation and a background investigation, which will include fingerprinting.
Entry level
Initially, under close supervision, incumbents perform a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of sanitary and storm collection systems.
Possession of a high school diploma or GED AND one (1) year of work experience in sewer construction or maintenance work.
Applicants who qualify in terms of relevant work experience and education, that best fit the needs of the City will be invited to participate in the examination process. The examination process may include a written examination weighted 100%. However, the City reserves the right to utilize alternative testing methods if deemed necessary. Candidates must receive a minimum passing score of 70%, as determined by the relative performance of all candidates in all portions of the examination. In the event of identical ratings, candidates' names will be arranged in order of application date/time, and, if the same, then arranged alphabetically.
The City of Stockton requires employees in this position to reasonably respond to emergencies at all times. Employees are required to maintain primary residence within 45 minutes of City Hall in order to timely respond to emergencies and meet the health, safety, and welfare needs of the City. New employees will have three months from their date of hire to comply with the requirement. Any interested candidates must be willing to adhere to this requirement throughout the duration of employment.

Incumbents must obtain and maintain a California Class A driver's license within one year from date of hire. Do you understand and agree with this requirement?
Incumbents must possess the physical strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds and to perform sustained physical labor. Do you understand and meet this requirement?
Incumbents will be required to work overtime, weekends, rotating shifts, standy-by, and off hour shifts as needed or in emergency situations. Do you understand and agree to this requirement?
Incumbents will be required to work outdoors in all weather conditions and to work with exposure to unpleasant and hazardous materials, chemicals and gases, in confined spaces, wearing self-contained breathing equipment heavy traffic and other hazards. Incumbents will be required to work with the constituents, hazards, and odors associated with human waste and wastewater. Do you understand and agree with this requirement?
Employees within this classification are designated as a "key responder." Designated on-call emergency personnel are expected to adhere to the residency requirement policy of the City of Stockton which states they must reside within a geographic area from City Hall which can be reached in forty-five (45) minutes.
