Job summary

SSM Health is seeking an inpatient/outpatient coder responsible for coding and abstracting accounts in accordance with coding guidelines. The role requires attention to documentation and adherence to official coding practices.

Key duties include assigning diagnostic and procedure codes, reviewing HCPCS charges and modifiers, monitoring work queues, and generating coding queries as needed. Ongoing education on coding changes is expected.

  • High School diploma/GED or 10 years of work experience.

  • Generates coding queries for clarification regarding physician documentation as needed.
  • Stays abreast of all changes in coding conventions and coding updates.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Assigns accurate diagnostic and procedure codes according to clinical documentation and official coding guidelines for outpatient hospital accounts.
  • Reviews HCPCS charges and codes for appropriateness of modifiers in relation to NCCI/CCI edits. Enters accurate charge information, when appropriate.
  • Monitors assigned work queues to ensure all records are charged in a timely manner.
  • Generates coding queries for clarification regarding physician documentation as needed.
  • Stays abreast of all changes in coding conventions and coding updates.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education
  • High School diploma/GED or 10 years of work experience.
Experience
  • No experience required.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.
  • Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Frequent use of hearing and speech to share information through oral communication. Ability to hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.
  • Frequent keyboard use/data entry.
  • Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting and gripping.
  • Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.
  • Rare climbing.
