Job description

Schedule: 3rd Shift - 11:00 PM - 7:00 AM

The Coater Helper is responsible for preparing the assigned manufacturing line for startup and providing general assistance for all operations within the Coating Department, including direct support for the Coater Operator and the Coater Assistant. This role performs a variety of activities involved in the coating and lamination of papers, films and other materials according to established procedures, and may rotate between silicone and adhesive stations. Due to variations within machine operations, job functions and tasks will fluctuate and vary depending on the assigned production line.

Responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring proper machine startup and completing miscellaneous duties to facilitate Coating Operations, including assisting with machine change-overs and associated set-ups and clean-ups.

  • Performing machine startup activities include staging rolls for efficient loading practices, loading rolls onto the machine, and prepping rolls for line operations after loading.

  • Troubleshooting during down time, assisting in web breaks, changing out filters, transporting hazardous waste drums from the Coating Department to the Red Label building and performing general support activities for the Coater Operator and Coater Assistant.

  • Performing the job duties of a Coating Assistant or Operator, as necessary and if assigned, dependent upon production rates, staffing and necessity of line repairs.

  • Ensuring that the coater is producing a quality product, and performing quality and in-process tests as assigned by Operator and/or Shift Supervisor.

  • Ensuring that raw and finished materials are correctly and efficiently put on and taken off the coater.

  • Completing all necessary paperwork, as assigned.

  • Assisting in working towards productivity and waste reduction standards.

  • Reports faulty operations and/or defective materials to Operator and/or Shift Supervisor.

  • Following all environmental, safety and housekeeping procedures and/or regulations, and assisting the rest of the crew in doing the same.

Line Operations tasks include:

  • The Coater Helper may be required to lift/move cores within 5-feet to load on the 505/506/509 production lines. Cores may weigh up to 40 pounds and may be located anywhere from knee to shoulder height on storage racks. The cores must first be pulled out from storage racks. This may occur on an occasional basis. Additionally, the Coater Helper frequently carries objects for typical machine operation (general tools/toolbox, etc. weighing less than ten pounds) on a frequent basis.

  • The Coater Helper is required to push rolls during loading. The rolls weigh anywhere from 3,000 to 5,000 pounds. The rolls are pushed on a dolly-track located on the ground adjacent to each Line. While on the track, the roll requires up to 90 pounds of force to initiate movement. After movement, the rolls require up to 20 pounds of force to continue moving. Additionally, the Coater Helper may be responsible for sealing, labeling and transporting waste drums (55-gallons) via hand truck to the Red Label Building (over 100 feet from Coating Department). This occurs on a weekly basis. For work on the 505/506/509 Line, the Coater Helper is required to move fiberboard drums of adhesive into place. This action is completed by sliding/pushing/maneuvering the drum less than 10 feet into the Line on an occasional basis.

  • The Coater Helper is required to stand/walk on a continuous basis while performing general required activities (primarily on concrete surfaces). The Coater Helper may be required to balance on an atypical or uneven surface while changing filters on the 505/506/509 Line.

  • The Coater Helper is required to Bend, Twist, Crawl, Squat, and/or Kneel for an extended period, primarily for line repair during "web breaks", which may occur up to one to three times per shift. Additional bending at the waist may occur while cleaning rollers and changing filters on an occasional basis. Twisting at the waist may occur on a frequent basis during machine loading.

  • The Coater Helper primarily works while reaching between waist and shoulder height (frequent basis, for general tasks). Additional work may require the employee to work from knee to waist height (occasional, primarily while wrapping roll paper over rolls); from floor to knee height (occasional, during line repair); and above shoulder height (occasional, while setting rolls into machine).

  • The Coater Helper will work while bending the neck down for an extended period (up to 1 hour) during general machine operations (occasional basis). The Coater Helper is not required to work while bending the neck up for an extended period during typical job activities.

  • The Coater Helper may be required to climb stairs on the line machine (occasional basis) as a part of typical job activities. The Coater Helper may be required to climb a ladder on the 505/506/509 Line to change filters.

  • The Coater Helper is required to perform handling, fingering and operating controls with hands on a frequent basis while performing machine operations and general tasks.
