Job summary

American Electric Power (AEP) in West Virginia seeks a Coal Equipment Operator to perform routine coal handling tasks and unskilled maintenance around yards and docks. You will operate and assist with rail and conveyor systems, transport coal, and support fuel deliveries while maintaining safety standards.

The role requires a 2-year technical degree or equivalent, with experience in equipment operation and training.

Qualifications

  • 2-year technical degree or high school diploma with two years related military/electric utility technical experience.
  • Must have performed the duties of Equipment Operator-Junior and maintain all the qualifications and certifications.
  • Must pass an examination and/or demonstrations as determined by the Company.

Responsibilities

  • Perform cleaning on coal conveyor system and related areas.
  • Load, unload and handle coal, materials, supplies and equipment; couple/uncouple railroad cars; set and release brakes; signal locomotive operator; flag traffic at crossings.
  • Operate track beds, replace light bulbs and perform lubrication and minor repairs on equipment.
  • Inspect fire equipment as assigned; assist in training other employees; report irregularities and assist in other tasks.

Job Posting End Date10-19-2026Please note the job posting will close on the day before the posting end dateJob SummaryPerform work of a routine nature in connection with the coal conveying system and unskilled manual work in and about the plant yard, coal docks, and in buildings, as assigned.Job DescriptionWhat you’ll do:Essential Job Functions & TasksPerform cleaning work on the coal conveyor system, such as bunkers, runways, trip room, belt decks, barge unloading equipment, coal docks and barges,tunnels and work areas.Load, unload and handle coal, materials, supplies and equipment; where required, couple and uncouple railroad cars; set and release brakes, operate rail switches; signal locomotive operator when to start, stop, go forward or backward; and flag traffic at crossings.
