Job Overview
Position: Coach – responsible for overseeing and developing high‑school athletic programs for multiple sports (hurdles, high jump, pole vault, horizontal jumps, throw, sprint, distance). The coach works with student‑athletes to prepare them for academic success and athletic competition.
Qualifications
- Open to qualified certificated on‑site or school‑site staff members. If no qualified certificated staff member applies, the position may be open to qualified persons outside the immediate site or district.
- Must be 21 years of age.
- Minimum of two (2) years head coaching at the high‑school level or head/assistant collegiate coaching level in the sport for which applying, preferred.
- Participation as a player at the high school or collegiate level in the sport for which applying is preferred.
- Must be trained in and possess valid CPR and First Aid clearance.
- Must provide all required certifications prior to the beginning of the designated sports season and the assumption of coaching duties.
- Valid IVP Fingerprint Card.
- Demonstrated leadership, organizational skills, and ability to work effectively with groups and individuals.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including ability to work with parent groups, administrators, staff, and students.
- Verifiable record of emphasizing academic excellence, positive attitudes, character, and sportsmanship for all student‑athletes.
- Ability to promote athletes who qualify under NCAA Clearinghouse standards for post‑secondary scholarship opportunities.
- Other alternatives as approved by the Governing Board.
Responsibilities
- Follow district and site procedures and policies; comply with the district Athletic Handbook, Code, and the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA).
- Oversee the freshman, JV, and/or varsity sports program for which hired.
- Serve as a positive role model for student‑athletes.
- As head coach, supervise and develop all teams in the program; assign duties to assistant coaches.
- Work closely with the Athletic Director to plan, implement, and schedule team activities, tryouts, practices, game plans, and summer activities.
- Identify and address any unsafe conditions of the facility or area where the sport is conducted; report hazards and complete work orders promptly.
- Teach student‑athletes sound, safe fundamental techniques throughout the season.
- Promote ethics, good conduct, and sportsmanship for all participants and coaches.
- Ensure safety and security of the team before, during, and after events, including traveling on the team bus.
- Manage uniforms and equipment, including end‑of‑season inventory.
- Submit annual written reports evaluating the program with recommendations for improvement.
- Assist the Athletic Director in evaluating assistant, freshman, or JV coaches.
- Verify that each team member is cleared by the Athletic Director before allowing tryout or practice.
- Provide prompt, accurate reporting of scores to local media and AIA.
- Conduct pre‑season parent orientation meetings for all levels, covering eligibility, athletic code, team rules, requirements, and risk factors.
- Adhere to district budget and expenditure guidelines and ordering processes.
- Comply with time constraints for practice, contest schedules, and off‑season schedules.
- Promote the school with pride and dignity at all times.
- Complete grade checks of all athletes per district guidelines.
- Ensure compliance with the Arizona Department of Education for all academic programs.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Employment Details
- FLSA: Non‑Exempt. Stipend distributed over the course of the sports season.
- Reports to Athletic Director and/or site principal.
