Adrian Public Schools seeks a student-centered Middle School Wrestling Coach to lead the 6th-8th grade program. The role emphasizes a safe, positive, and competitive environment focused on physical growth, athletic mastery, and character development.

You will teach foundational wrestling mechanics to beginners and refine advanced techniques for experienced athletes. Preferred is a valid teaching certificate; CPR certification is recommended.

Qualifications

• Experience in wrestling and coaching youth/middle school ages preferred.
• CPR certification recommended or obtainable before season start.
• Ability to prepare student athletes for high school wrestling.

Responsibilities

• Regular, reliable, punctual attendance.
• Academic mentorship and character development of student-athletes.
• Design progressive practice plans for beginners to advanced wrestlers.
• Teach fundamentals (stances, motion, takedowns, escapes, turns, pinning) with safety as priority.
• Oversee dual meets, tournaments, weigh-ins, and team travel with the Athletic Office.
• Maintain wrestling room safety and equipment inventory.
• Communicate clearly with parents, school staff, and athletic administrators.

SUMMARY

We are seeking a student-centered Middle School Wrestling Coach to help lead our 6th-8th grade wrestling program. The ideal candidate will foster a safe, positive, and competitive environment focused on physical growth, athletic mastery, and character development. The ideal coach will be able to teach foundational wrestiling mechanics to beginners and refine advaced techniques of more experienced athletes.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

• Must have regular, reliable and punctual attendance.
• Must have Academic Mentorship & Character Development:
• Monitor student-athletes' academic progress, attendance, and conduct to ensure compliance with school academic eligibility policies.
• Serve as a positive role model, emphasizing sportsmanship, accountability, personal discipline, and emotional maturity.
• Differentiated Skill Instruction & Practice Design:
• Design structured, progressive practice plans that accommodate athletes ranging from complete beginners to advanced club-level wrestlers.
• Teach fundamental mechanics—including stances, motion, takedowns, escapes, turns, and pin combinations with strict emphasis on safety and proper form.
• Challenge advanced wrestlers with complex chain wrestling, situational sparring, match strategy, and mental preparation.
• Oversee dual meets, tournaments, weigh-ins, and team travel in coordination with the Athletic Athletics Office.
• Manage wrestling room safety and equipment inventory (mats, uniforms, headgear).
• Maintain clear, proactive communication with parents, school staff, and athletic administrators.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Experience: Prior wrestling experience (high school, collegiate, or club level) and previous coaching or mentoring experience with youth/middle school ages preferred.
• Candidates should have current CPR certification, or be able to obtain it prior to the start of the season.
• Candidates should have the ability to prepare student athletes for high school wrestling.
• Other duties may be assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Supervise assistant coaches.
• Supervise any volunteers.
• Supervise student athletes in that sport.
• Supervise any students or persons associated with that sport.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Valid teaching certificate is preferred although not required. Hrs. in physical education or equivalent hours and courses in coaching theory are helpful. Certification in CPR, First Aid is recommended.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

The ability to read and interpret documents, instructional manuals, technical reports, procedures, and rulings. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of students or employees.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

The ability to calculate figures and amounts, to work with percentages. The ability to apply basic concepts in algebra and geometry. To have some computer literacy. The ability to work with statistics.

REASONING ABILITY

The ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. The ability to problem solve various situations. The ability to use of sound judgment in making decisions that affect the program.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Exhibit qualities of leadership. Have the ability to organize. Show a spirit of cooperation. Possess the ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in a specific field. Demonstrates the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community. Possess the ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and the Board of Education policies.
