Job summary

Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges is seeking a part-time Swim Coach to lead and supervise youth swimmers, following YMCA guidelines and safety procedures. Requires 2+ years coaching, ASCA level 2 or higher, CPR/AED/First Aid, and YMCA Lifeguarding certifications are required.

You will plan practices, coach strokes, and engage families. Salary is $16.00-$19.00 per hour; benefits include paid sick leave, disability and life insurance, and access to YMCA facilities; a sign-on bonus may apply for

Qualifications

  • Minimum age 18.
  • 2+ years prior experience in competitive aquatic coaching.
  • ASCA level 2 certification or higher.
  • CPR/First Aid/AED and lifeguard certifications (YMCA lifeguarding).
  • Oxygen Administration certification (within 30 days).
  • Must demonstrate lifeguard skills per YMCA standards.
  • Ability to maintain certification readiness.
  • Attends meetings and supports program operations.

Responsibilities

  • Instructs swimmers with YMCA guidelines and safety.
  • Builds relationships with swimmers and parents; recruits volunteers.
  • Assists in year-round competitions.
  • Provides daily feedback on stroke technique.
  • Discusses character development during practice.
  • Communicates swim team information to parents.
  • Attends meetings, clinics and fundraisers as needed.
  • Follows YMCA policies; completes incident reports.
  • Uses equipment properly and cleans up after sessions.
  • Keeps the Competitive Aquatic Director informed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements
Essential Functions
  • Instructs a group of swimmers in accordance with YMCA guidelines and having prepared practice plans accordingly; while maintaining constant surveillance of all program participants emphasizing the importance of pool safety.
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with swimmers and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
  • Assists in year-round competitions in both YMCA and USA sanctioned swimming events
  • Provides positive, encouraging and specific feedback on a daily basis with regard to stoke technique.
  • Uses teachable moments to discuss character development and provides constructive feedback during practice session using positive motivation techniques.
  • Communicates swim team information to parents in a positive and supportive manner.
  • Attends meetings, clinics, banquets, fundraisers and team social functions as required and needed.
  • Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • Utilize equipment appropriately with activities and incorporate skill development. Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Clean up pool deck after each session. Reports damaged equipment.
  • Keeps Competitive Aquatic Director appraised of situations requiring his/her attention.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements / Qualifications
  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Minimum of 2 years prior experience in competitive aquatic coaching.
  • Possess ASCA level 2 certification or higher.
  • Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, ARC Swim Coach Safety Training, First Aid.
  • Current YMCA Lifeguarding or Red Cross Lifeguarding and obtain YMCA Lifeguarding Certification within 60 days of hire.
  • Oxygen Administration certification (required within 30 days of hire)
  • Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
  • Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
