Job Description

Salary: Minimum $62,750 (Teacher Salary Scale, Exempt)

Primary Purpose: The Special Education Co‑Teacher is responsible for the instruction of eligible handicapped students as assigned by the Admission, Review and Dismissal Committee within the special education program and curriculum guidelines.

All employees of SISD are expected to act with integrity, support organizational goals, communicate in a clear and respectful manner, champion the needs of our students and drive continuous improvement.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate with required special education endorsements for assignments.
Preferred
  • Minimum of one-year student teaching and approved internship
Special Knowledge / Skills
  • Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area
  • Knowledge of ARD Committee process and IEP goal‑setting and implementation
  • General knowledge of curriculum and instruction
Major Responsibilities and Duties
  • Implement instructional program and utilize knowledge of learning styles and modalities.
  • Correlate IEP with regular education curriculum guides.
  • Requisition materials, equipment and supplies needed for implementation.
  • Serve as a member of the ARD/IEP Committee: administer criterion‑referenced testing and recommend appropriate goals based on results; participate in placement decisions based on data presented to the committee.
  • Assist regular school personnel in providing an appropriate educational environment for students included in the general education classroom.
  • Establish new objectives based on the appraisal team findings and redesign curriculum to suit new objectives; suggest and provide alternative teaching methods.
  • Serve as a co‑teacher or in‑class support for a specific subject area as appropriate.
  • Assess relation between student performance and disabling condition.
  • Provide remedial or tutorial assistance to students.
  • Utilize the special education staff and coordinate input to meet the needs of each special education child.
  • Request and coordinate the available special services of the District as needed.
  • Establish frequent communication and cooperation with the student’s family to facilitate environmental changes necessary to promote learning and/or behavioral changes.
  • Maintain confidential records of assigned students and complete end‑of‑year reports and other evaluations.
  • Fulfill campus duties as assigned to other teachers’ subjects to meet the program needs of the special education child.
  • Compile with the position description of the regular classroom teacher as applied to co‑teach or in‑class support situations.
  • Perform other appropriate duties as assigned by the principal.
Working Conditions

Maintain emotional control under stress. Work requires frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling, moving small stacks of textbooks and other classroom equipment. May be required to lift or position students with physical disabilities; control behavior through physical restraint; assist non‑ambulatory students. Exposure to biological hazards.
