Job summary

Independence Construction seeks engaged college students for Co-op/Intern positions, offering exposure to estimating, field engineering, and project coordination across our Northeast Ohio and Pennsylvania projects. Interns will learn through hands-on tasks while supporting project teams.

We encourage multi-term internships with travel and a 40+ hour weekly commitment, typically aligning with academic calendars and site needs.

Qualifications

  • College students enrolled in a 2- or 4-year university pursuing an associate or bachelor's degree in civil engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
  • It is strongly encouraged that students intern for at least 2 terms (not necessarily consecutive).
  • Co-ops/Interns are required to work 40+ hour weeks, preferably when the student is taking a semester away from school.
  • A degree of travel is required for the internship.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in estimating tasks: take-offs, review quotations, assist in subcontractor solicitations, attend project walk-throughs.
  • Assist in updating field drawings and documenting weekly project meetings.
  • Assist in running field foreman meetings, toolbox talks, and look-ahead schedule updates.
  • Coordinate with field personnel on safety inspections, RFI process, submittals, and shop drawings.

Co-op or Intern is responsible for and will learn various jobsite functions including, but not limited to:
  • Estimating:
    • Develop quantity take-offs based on project plans
    • Review subcontractor quotations
    • Review project plans and specifications
    • Assist in subcontractor solicitations for proposals
    • Attends and host project walk-throughs
  • Assistant Engineer:
    • Update field office drawings as needed
    • Assist in running and documenting weekly project meetings
    • Work with field personnel on daily safety inspections
    • Assist in managing RFI process
    • Work with subcontractors on schedule updates
    • Assist in the management of change orders
    • Research and estimate costs relating to work orders/change orders
    • Report development and updates
  • Assistant Superintendent or Field Engineer:
    • Assist in running field foreman meetings and toolbox talks
    • Make weekly look-ahead and monthly baseline schedule updates
    • Generate daily safety inspections and write ups
    • Manage and coordinate subcontractors' location and timing of work
    • Assist in the managing of submittals and shop drawings
    • Assist in gathering field conditions information for RFI's/issues
    • Assist in resolving field logistics issues
