Job summary

Job description

Position Overview

Responsible for overseeing the maintenance, upkeep, and proper operation of both 5‑axis milling machines and all mill room tools and equipment. Utilizes knowledge and experience in mill operations to lead quality improvement projects, research material and tool upgrades, and document procedures.

Essential Functions
  • Communicate daily with the mill supervisor and floor technicians to guide setup and monitor progress of new projects.
  • Provide skid sizes for parts to be milled while effectively communicating with suppliers and customers.
  • Model basic CAD files to prepare machines for operation.
  • Assess material thickness and machine capabilities to determine proper tool selections, feeds, and speeds.
  • Write planner mill tool paths for foam stack‑up.
  • Analyze part geometry and clearances to write 3‑axis and 5‑axis tool paths for efficient undercutting and finish cutting.
  • Assist in sequencing mill room operations to meet schedules and budgets.
  • Utilize and maintain machine tool simulation software.
  • Operate and troubleshoot Par XR 225 and CMS 5‑axis gantry mills and their controllers.
  • Perform mill alignment procedures for Par and CMS 5‑axis gantry mills.
  • Maintain and retrieve CAD files in the Teamcenter environment.
  • Follow proper procedures for safe handling of hazardous wastes.
  • Provide technical expertise to properly operate and maintain milling machines.
  • Resolve milling machine issues by applying experience or contacting manufacturer service departments.
  • Ensure routine preventative maintenance is performed on milling machines and related equipment.
  • Train and mentor mill technicians on processes, maintenance, and machine operation.
  • Lead efforts to optimize master quality through research and documentation of best practices.
  • Propose and implement process improvements to meet safety, quality, schedule, and budget goals.
  • Act as a liaison between the mill, product tooling, and material science during new construction methodologies testing.
  • Assist in mill schedule planning, package configuration, and forecast updates.
  • Document supplies, S&E, labor, and material tracking.
  • Adhere to company policies and procedures.
  • Promote safe work habits, maintain a clean work area, and support 5s initiatives.
Required Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree in Graphic Engineering with CAD certificate or equivalent experience and/or training in drafting or technical illustration.
  • Experience in the marine industry preferred.
  • Proficiency in Unigraphics manufacturing software, Unigraphics Machine Tool Builder, machine tool simulation, or Post Builder.
  • Strong Unigraphics, freeform, and feature modeling skills.
  • Lean Six Sigma Black Belt preferred.
