Job summary

Job description

The CNC Machinist Internship is an entry-level position designed for individuals who want to build hands-on manufacturing skills and begin a career in precision machining. In this role, you will work alongside experienced machinists to learn machine setup, operation, inspection techniques, blueprint reading, and safe shop practices while helping produce high-quality parts that meet customer and engineering specifications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Train under the guidance of senior machinists, programmers, and supervisors to learn CNC machining processes and best practices.
  • Assist with machine setup, loading raw materials, changing tools, and monitoring machining cycles.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, work instructions, and part specifications.
  • Use precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges to inspect parts and verify tolerances.
  • Perform basic edits, offsets, and adjustments as directed to support quality and production goals.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas in accordance with company safety standards.
  • Support deburring, part finishing, labeling, packaging, and documentation activities as needed.
  • Learn preventive maintenance basics and assist with routine machine care.
  • Communicate clearly with team members regarding production status, quality concerns, and improvement opportunities.
  • Participate in training, continuous improvement efforts, and other shop support activities as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required; enrollment in or completion of a machining, manufacturing, industrial technology, or related program is preferred.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and interest in machining, manufacturing, or skilled trades.
  • Basic math skills, including fractions, decimals, and measurement conversions.
  • Ability to follow instructions, learn quickly, and maintain attention to detail.
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to ask questions and take direction.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Previous shop, tool, or manufacturing experience is helpful but not required.
  • Familiarity with measuring tools, blueprint reading, or CAD/CAM software is a plus but not required.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift materials or parts throughout the shift.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able to use hand tools, measuring equipment, and personal protective equipment safely.
  • Work is performed in a clean, well-lit, climate-controlled manufacturing facility designed to support employee comfort, equipment performance, and product quality.
  • Exposure to typical machine shop conditions, including moving equipment, metal chips, coolants, and moderate noise levels.
Compensation & Schedule

This position may be offered as a full-time trainee role or a part-time/full-time internship depending on the candidate's school schedule and business needs. Compensation is competitive and based on experience, education, and availability, with opportunities for wage progression as skills increase.
