Job Details

Job Location: Wichita, KS 67210, Position Type: Contractor, Job Shift: Day

SUMMARY

The CNC Machinist is responsible for setting up, and operating computer numerical control (CNC) machines to produce high-precision components used in aircraft and related systems. The machinist works from technical drawings, blueprints, and CAD models, ensuring that parts meet strict standards for quality and precision. Unlike a machine operator, the CNC Machinist has advanced skills in machine setup and troubleshooting. They collaborate closely with engineering and quality teams to optimize production processes and maintain high accuracy.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Program (if required), set up, and operate CNC machines to manufacture components in accordance with engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Interpret complex blueprints, CAD models, and technical documents to determine machining operations, tooling requirements, and part dimensions.
  • Select appropriate cutting tools, speeds, and feeds for machining operations, optimizing processes for efficiency and precision.
  • Perform first article inspections (FAI) and in-process quality checks to ensure all parts meet customer requirements.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues with machine tooling or setups to minimize downtime and ensure optimal production.
  • Adjust machine settings and offsets as needed to maintain tight tolerances and quality control throughout the production run.
  • Collaborate with engineering, production, and quality teams to improve machining processes and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Document machine setup procedures, part dimensions, and tool usage to ensure repeatability and consistency in production.
  • Perform routine maintenance on CNC machines, ensuring they are in good working condition and calibrated according to specifications.
Qualifications
  • Strong understanding of blueprint reading, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and material properties used in the production of aircraft components.
  • Knowledge of cutting tools, machining speeds, and feeds for different materials (e.g., aluminum, titanium, composites).
  • Knowledge of quality control standards and inspection techniques, including the use of precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, CMM).
  • Familiarity with aerospace industry standards and safety protocols.
  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, CATIA, Siemens NX) for developing and modifying CNC programs a plus.
  • Proficiency in CNC programming (e.g., G-code, M-code) and operating various types of CNC machines, such as mills, lathes, and multi-axis machines a plus.
COMPETENCIES
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to ensure parts are machined to exact specifications, maintaining tight tolerances and preventing defects.
  • Problem-Solving: Skilled at troubleshooting machine issues and adjusting settings to optimize performance and minimize errors.
  • Technical Communication: Clear communication with engineers, quality inspectors, and team members to ensure alignment on part specifications and process improvements.
  • Time Management: Ability to prioritize tasks and manage machine setups and production runs to meet deadlines and maintain productivity.
  • Continuous Improvement: A proactive mindset in identifying opportunities to enhance machining processes and reduce waste.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a CNC Machinist, preferably in the production of high-precision components for aircraft or related systems required.
  • Experience in CNC machine setup, operation, and programming (if required) for complex parts with tight tolerances required.
  • Proficiency in operating 3-4-5-axis CNC machines aerospace machining experience is preferred.
  • Familiarity with aerospace materials (e.g., titanium, aluminum, stainless steel) and their machining requirements preferred.
  • Associate’s degree in Manufacturing Technology, Machining, or a related technical field is a plus.
WORKING CONDITIONS

The Work Environment is in a manufacturing environment, working in machine shops where CNC machines are located. May involve exposure to noise, vibration, and airborne particles, necessitating the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as earplugs and safety glasses.

The Physical Demands of the job require an employee to speak or listen, walk, sit, stand, bend, and reach for extended periods of time. There may also be some reaching with hands and arms overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally. Frequent use of eye-hand coordination, repetitive hand movement and manual dexterity use of hands and/or fingers, to handle or feel. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus. An employee will occasionally need to lift/move up to 50 lbs.

SHIFT AND HOURS

This role may require working on a rotating shift basis, including nights, weekends, and overtime, depending on production schedules. Flexibility is essential.

WORK AUTHORIZATION/SECURITY CLEARANCE
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
