Machinist – Basic
In this job you will machine various precision components to make S&C products in a production environment with a measured standard production rate. You will be held accountable for the quality of your work. Duration of set‑ups varies from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours. Once set‑up, a job will run from 30 minutes to 5 hours. Most tasks require good hand‑eye coordination and a full range of motion of both hands and arms on a regular and repetitive basis.
Shift
- 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM (Mon‑Friday)
- Plus, Overtime as needed.
Compensation
The estimated hourly base pay ranges from $22.25 – $31.00 per hour. This role is also eligible for S&C’s annual incentive bonus, subject to eligibility criteria.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate various manual and CNC machines to fabricate parts according to standard specifications.
- Set up machines with the appropriate materials needed to complete the job.
- Interpret blueprints, drawings, and other technical specifications to understand the requirements for basic parts and ensure accurate fabrication.
- Perform basic routine maintenance on machines and tools to ensure longevity and quality fabrication, including cleaning and reporting mechanical/electrical issues to department leaders.
- Utilize an overhead crane and other material handling equipment to safely position materials for machining.
- Complete the first‑piece inspection of parts using various measurement tools, confirming that the pieces are the correct material, quality, and specifications before beginning the machining process.
- Maintain accurate records of fabrication activities, including tracking the progress of job orders and documenting corrective action needed for the machine, part, or process.
- Deburr metal parts using hand and/or power tools, ensuring materials are safe to handle and are in a state that’s ready for further processing.
- Meet department targets and consistently adhere to quality and safety standards.
- Understand and comply with all applicable Company policies and rules.
What You’ll Need to Succeed
- High School diploma/GED
- Job Requirements (To select this job at a minimum you must have the following):
- 1+ year of demonstrated experience with the operation of manual and computer‑controlled machinery.
- Ability to use hand tools and precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and height gages.
- Knowledge of machine controls and programs.
- Ability to read blueprints.
- Ability to work independently and meet requirements of assigned materials requests.
- Good communication skills (written and verbal) with the ability to articulate information efficiently and effectively to team members in a variety of production support departments.
- Basic computer skills with the ability to review and respond to requests via internal applications.
- Basic math skills with the ability to calculate quantities, weights, and measurements.
- Good interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to understand and complete requests given by team member inside and outside of the department.
- Ability and willingness to follow Health Safety & Environment procedures accurately, reporting concerns promptly to the safety action team.
Preferred
- 3+ year(s) of machinist and manufacturing experience a plus, Relevant Work Experience
- Experience with set‑up and operation of manual equipment and computer‑controlled machining and turning centers.
Major Physical Demands
- Standing: Most tasks are performed in a standing position with intermittent walking.
- Lifting: Frequent lifting of items ranging in weight from 5 lbs. to 50 lbs.
- Walking: Occasional walking moderate distances.
- Carrying: Frequent carrying of items ranging in weight from 5 lbs. to 25 lbs.
- Pushing: Occasional use of electric hand truck to move parts a moderate distance.
- Pulling: Occasional use of electric hand truck to move parts a moderate distance.
- Bending: Frequent bending and crouching required to perform a variety of tasks. Reaching.
- Reaching: Continuous full range of motion from above the shoulders to below the knees.
- Handling: Continuous handling of parts ranging in weight from 5 lbs. to 50 lbs., along with a variety of hand‑tools.
