Job summary

VirTra is seeking a seasoned CNC machinist to set up and operate 3-, 4-, and 5-axis CNC mills and lathes, producing precision components for our defense-grade simulation systems. You will read blueprints, daub tooling, and verify program execution with trial runs, ensuring high accuracy and efficiency.

Strong knowledge of GD&T and Mastercam is preferred. The role emphasizes maintaining quality, meeting production timelines, and adhering to ISO 9001 procedures while collaborating with the shop

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate 3-, 4- and 5-axis CNC mills and multi-axis lathes to produce precision parts.
• Mounts, aligns, and secures tooling and workpiece; loads programs and verifies with trial runs.
• Reads blueprints and planning sheets to determine tooling and machining methods.
• Read and manually create G-code for simple programs; adjust speeds, feeds, and depths of cut.
• Ensure 100% on-time delivery and 100% quality; maintain ISO 9001 processes.

Job description

Responsible for setting up and operating CNC machining centers and CNC lathes to perform various functions, such as cutting, drilling, milling, reaming, boring, and broaching of metallic and nonmetallic work pieces, utilizing knowledge of machine tool capabilities, machinability of materials, and shop math.
Essential Functions

• Efficiently setup and operate 3-, 4- and 5-axis CNC mills and/or multi-axis lathes and manual mills and/or lathes to execute the production of precision products with little guidance from technical lead.
• Set-up responsibilities include:
• Mounts, aligns, and secures tooling, attachments, and work piece on machine.
• Selects and installs cutting tools in machine.
• Loads program in machine or enters commands to retrieve preprogrammed instructions from data base.
• Observes operation of machine on trial run to prove out programmed instructions.
• Determines, sets and adjusts speeds, feeds and depth of cut; selects, mounts and aligns tooling, attachments and materials in proper relationship.
• Discusses programming errors with supervisor to resolve problems.
• Strong knowledge of GD&T and how to use inspection equipment such as micrometers, dial indicators, height gauges, pin gauges, gauge blocks and plate inspection.
• Grinds own tool bits and drills as required.
• Support both prototyping and high-volume machining.
• Analyze drawing, sketches, and design data of part to determine dimension and configuration of cuts, selection of cutting tools, and machine speed and feed rates, according to knowledge of machine shop processes, part specifications, and machine capabilities.
• Reads and interprets blueprints, planning sheets, sketches, and related technical data to determine tooling requirements, setup procedures, control settings, and machining methods and sequences.
• Support both prototyping and high-volume machining.
• Shall be able to read and manually create G-code programs at the control for simple programs such as material prep.
• Calculates and sets machine controls to position spindle in relationship to work piece and to regulate factors, such as cutting depth, speed, feed and coolant flow.
• Starts machine and monitors displays and machine operation to detect malfunctions.
• Stops machine to change cutting tools when broken, dull, or cutting unacceptably.
• Check and correct as many dimensions as possible and practical for the operation prior to submitting first piece to inspection.
• Confirm inspection results for the operation prior to running production parts.
• Provide accurate data for the computerized shop control system.
• Fill out discrepant material tags properly including notification of defects to supervisor.
• Enters commands or manually adjusts machine controls to correct malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining.
• Revise programs to eliminate instruction errors or omissions and communicate necessary changes back to programming.
• Work towards our goals of 100% On-Time Delivery and 100% Quality.
• Communicates with co-workers and supervisor to receive instructions and coordinate general work activities.
• Clean machine, tooling, and parts.
• Perform machine maintenance.
• Clean-up of work area, and other areas of the facility as asked adhering to 5S principles.
• May be asked to assist in other plant functions under direct supervision of the shop supervisor.
• Performs other duties as assigned or needed to better a department or company.
• Comply with department ISO 9001 processes and company quality policy.
• Manage and log time worked daily by project code.
• Provide miscellaneous support to other departments, as needed.
  

Education And Experience

• 5+ years of trade school, vocational education, work experience, or apprenticeship.
• Knowledge of Mastercam, Fanuc Controls and AWC Pallet change systems.
  

Physical Demands

• Stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to the floor.
• Exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally.
• Exert 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently.
• Exert up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• Conditions are loud.
  

Additional Requirements

• Full time position consisting of 40-hours per week with work schedule generally being 2:15 to 10:45 OR 6:15 to 2:45 Monday – Friday. This position may require periodic overtime and weekend work during periods of high production and/or audit.
