Job summary

Kern Microtechnik GmbH is seeking a skilled Field Service Engineer to install, maintain and repair CNC machines at customer sites in the Chicago area and across the U.S. West Coast.

This home-based role requires strong diagnostic abilities, travel up to 75%, and the ability to provide on-site demonstrations and remote support. Ideal candidates have 3–5 years in CNC or machine tool service, with CNC milling knowledge and experience with Heidenhain controls.

Qualifications

• 3–5 years experience as a Field Service Engineer/Technician in the CNC or machine tool industry
• Strong skills in diagnosing electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, PLC, and CNC issues
• Solid CNC milling knowledge; Heidenhain experience is a plus
• Ability to read technical manuals, schematics, and engineering drawings
• Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and ability to travel up to 75% domestically

Responsibilities

• Diagnose and repair electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues on CNC machines and automation systems on-site across West Coast in a timely and efficient manner
• Install, commission, and test CNC machines and associated automation equipment at customer facilities
• Perform preventive maintenance to ensure optimal machine performance, minimize downtime, and maximize productivity
• Conduct machine demonstrations and provide technical expertise during customer visits
• Accurately document all service activities, including parts used, labor time, and any technical issues encountered
• Provide remote and telephone support to customers for troubleshooting and technical guidance
