Job Objectives

Functions as a direct patient caregiver performing tasks to assist registered nurses. Performs hands‑on care, assistance with ADLs, and specified technical tasks for a group of patients under the supervision of an RN or Team Leader.

Responsibilities

• Take and record temperature, pulse, respiration rates, blood pressures, weights, heights, and intake‑output measurements.
• Encourage patients to turn, cough, and take deep breaths and to use incentive spirometry as specified by the Plan of Care.
• Ambulate and assist patients in and out of bed, into wheelchairs, and transport when necessary.
• Attend to nutritional needs of patients, which may include distributing meal trays, feeding, filling and passing out water pitchers.
• Provide morning or evening care, which may include bed baths, oral hygiene, combing hair, back care, dressing patients, changing bed linens, cleaning over‑bed tables and bedside stands, straightening rooms, and other supportive care as needed.
• Empty drains, canisters, urine bags, bedpans, and emesis basins and record intake and output.
• Assist in maintaining a safe environment, reporting equipment that is out of order, handling linen appropriately, and storing supplies.
• Provide general care such as positioning, lifting or turning patients; assisting with bedpan, urinal or commode; pre‑operative supportive care; and application/removal of abdominal binders or anti‑embolism stockings and sequential compression devices.
• Empty and clean ostomy bags as per procedure.
• Collect urine, stool, and sputum specimens as ordered.
• Perform tasks such as ROM, and assist with ambulatory devices as specified by the patient’s plan of care.
• May perform phlebotomy (requires additional training), including correct labeling with two patient identifiers, maintaining lab‑draw supplies, and restocking.
• May perform EKG (requires special training).
• Promptly answer patient call lights and respond to patient requests.
• Report significant changes in patients’ condition to RN.
• Help maintain a clean and orderly patient and work environment.
• Employ all established infection control policies, including standard precautions, transmission‑based isolation precautions, OSHA standards, safety measures, and proper body mechanics in performance of the job.
• Document and maintain patient records as appropriate.
• Gather equipment for O2 setup, check O2 for connection and proper placement.
• Check for proper functioning of equipment at patient bedside.
• Ambulate patients with oxygen.
• Set up suction equipment and check for proper function.
• Demonstrate knowledge and competency in providing for age‑specific needs of the population served.
• Demonstrate ability to perform skills required of the position.
• Follow policies, procedures, and safety standards. Complete required education assignments annually, work toward achieving goals and objectives, and participate in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• HEALTH/SAFETY/COMPETENCE: Cannot pose a direct threat to health or safety of self or others. Must provide safe, efficient, competent care to patients. Must demonstrate competency of the unit‑specific functions described in the performance continuum, skills lists, and/or standards.

Qualifications

• Minimum Education: None specified; however, an applicant with a high school diploma or an equivalent certificate (GED) may be given preference.
• Minimum Experience: Hospital experience preferred. Medical terminology a plus. Must be able to operate a computer and possess excellent interpersonal skills. Must be able to read with comprehension, write legibly, and perform basic arithmetic computation. Must have understanding and knowledge of patient care that may be appropriately delegated to nursing assistants.
• Licensure Requirement: Nurse Assistant (Non‑Certified): Certification is not a requirement. CPR is required (if not currently certified, must be certified or recertified during the orientation period).
  CNA: Must have and maintain Tennessee State CNA certification. CPR is required (if not currently certified, must be certified or recertified during the orientation period).
