Job summary

onsemi seeks a CMP Equipment Engineer for its Hopewell Junction, NY site. The role focuses on sustaining, optimizing, and improving 300mm CMP equipment, partnering with Process Engineering, Manufacturing, Maintenance, Facilities, Quality, Planning, and vendors to ensure safe, cost-efficient fab operations.

The candidate will drive reliability improvements, develop PM procedures, and lead CIP initiatives using Lean and Six Sigma methods.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, or Materials Engineering.
  • BS in Engineering or a technical field; MS degree is a plus.
  • 0–2 years of experience in semiconductor processing or similar.
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) required.

Responsibilities

  • Own and sustain 300mm CMP equipment performance across assigned toolsets.
  • Drive improvements in tool availability, MTBF, MTTR, OEE, PM compliance, and repeat failures.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve equipment failures using systematic problem-solving methodologies.
  • Lead RCA activities for chronic equipment issues.
  • Develop CAPAs to eliminate recurring downtime.
  • Monitor tool health indicators and equipment fingerprints.
  • Develop, optimize, and standardize PM procedures; implement predictive maintenance strategies.

Job Description

onsemi is seeking a CMP Equipment Engineer at our Hopewell Junction, NY site. The 300mm CMP Equipment Engineer is responsible for sustaining, improving, and optimizing the performance of Chemical Mechanical Planarization (CMP) equipment in a high-volume semiconductor manufacturing environment. This role focuses on maximizing tool availability, reducing equipment-related defects, improving process stability, driving cost reduction initiatives, and supporting continuous improvement activities across the CMP sector.

The engineer partners closely with Process Engineering, Manufacturing, Maintenance Technicians, Facilities, Quality, Planning, and equipment vendors to ensure stable and efficient fab operations while meeting safety, quality, delivery, and cost objectives.

Equipment Sustaining & Reliability
  • Own and sustain 300mm CMP equipment performance across assigned toolsets.
  • Drive improvements in: Tool availability, MTBF, MTTR, OEE, PM compliance, Repeat failures
  • Troubleshoot and resolve equipment failures using systematic problem-solving methodologies.
  • Lead root cause analysis (RCA) activities for chronic equipment issues.
  • Develop corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) to eliminate recurring downtime.
  • Monitor tool health indicators and equipment fingerprints.
Preventive & Predictive Maintenance
  • Develop, optimize, and standardize PM procedures. Reduce PM variability and improve maintenance quality. Implement predictive maintenance strategies using equipment trends and SPC data. Define spare parts strategy and critical spare inventory requirements. Support maintenance technician training and certification programs.
Continuous Improvement (CIP)
  • Lead continuous improvement projects focused on:
  • Availability improvement, Cost reduction, Throughput optimization, Defect reduction, Cycle time improvement. Utilize Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies. Perform Value Stream Mapping (VSM) and downtime analysis. Identify bottlenecks and implement solutions to improve fab performance.
Technical Troubleshooting
  • Support troubleshooting of: Polish modules, Transfer robots, Slurry delivery systems, Pad conditioning systems, Vacuum systems, Chemical delivery systems, Endpoint systems, PLC and automation interfaces. Work closely with vendors on escalated technical issues and hardware upgrades. Support tool recoveries after major failures, power events, or maintenance activities.
Process & Production Support
  • Partner with Process Engineers to improve process capability and defect performance.
  • Support engineering experiments, qualifications, and tool matching activities.
  • Assist with recipe setup, equipment qualifications, and production ramp activities.
  • Support line yield and excursion investigations related to CMP equipment.
Data Analysis & Reporting
  • Analyze equipment performance data and generate actionable insights.
  • Track and report sector KPIs, including availability, Utilization, MTBF, MTTR, Cost of ownership, Defectivity, PM completion rates, and present technical updates and improvement plans to leadership.
Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure all work is performed in compliance with semiconductor safety standards, LOTO procedures , Chemical safety requirements, and environmental regulations Fab contamination control standards. Participate in safety audits and risk assessments.
Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in: Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering , Chemical Engineering , Materials Engineering
Experience
  • Education: BS degree in Engineering or a technical field. An MS degree is a plus
  • Experience: 0 to 2 years of relevant experience years in semiconductor processing or a similar industry
  • Knowledge of tools such as Applied Materials Reflexion. Ebara CMP platforms, Similar CMP toolsets
  • Experience working in cross-functional teams to achieve goals and metrics
  • Experience with FMEA risk analysis is a plus
  • Intermediate-level data analysis skills, specifically in Excel or JMP, using formulas, pivots, and charts, are required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly PowerPoint
  • Strong communication skills with experience in presenting technical project details
  • Self-motivated and results-oriented
  • Fluency (written and oral) in English is required

Salary: onsemi is excited to share the base salary range for this position is $65.800 to $102,100 exclusive of fringe benefits or potential bonuses. The final pay rate for the successful candidate will depend on geographic location, skills, education, experience, and/or consideration of the internal equity of our current team members.
