Job summary

AMETEK, Inc. seeks a skilled CMM Technician for the Richmond Extreme Precision Optics site to program and operate high‑precision measuring equipment. You will program CMMs and verify parts against GD&T, collaborating with Manufacturing, Quality and Engineering to meet schedules.

Required are 5 years of related experience, a technical diploma or higher, and strong math and CAD skills. You will work with CALYPSO, PC‑DMIS, and QUINDOS in a safety‑driven environment.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma, technical or associate degree preferred.
  • 5 years related industry experience.
  • 4 years programming and operating CMMs; familiarity with CALYPSO/PC-DMIS/QUINDOS is a plus.
  • Strong GD&T knowledge per ASME/ANSI Y14.5.
  • Ability to read drawings and work with 3D CAD models with precision.
  • Experience with dial indicators, calipers, micrometers, profilometers.
  • Commitment to safety and lean manufacturing practices.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficient with MS Word and Excel; capable of multitasking with shifting priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Develop concepts for and execute detailed CMM programming to measure components from drawings and solid models.
  • Program and operate multiple CMMs using CALYPSO, PC-DMIS, and QUINDOS software.
  • Program CMMs online and offline using solid models (STEP, Parasolid).
  • Verify parts are within geometric tolerances and compliant with drawings.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing, Quality, and Engineering to meet delivery schedules.
  • Assist in continuous improvement of procedures for efficiency.
  • Create, document, and maintain inspection procedures and results.
  • Develop fixturing concepts with mechanical design for implementation.
  • Support sales with quotes as needed and assist training of others.

As a CMM Technician at our Richmond Extreme Precision Optics site, you will be responsible for programming and operation of Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) used to measure high precision glass components.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop concepts for and execute detailed programming of CMM operations to measure components based on drawings, solid models and other design information as required.
  • Program and operate multiple CMMs (Coordinate Measuring Machines) using various software packages including Zeiss CALYPSO, Hexagon Metrology PC-DMIS and QUINDOS 7.
  • Program CMM both online and offline using solid models such as step or parasolid formats.
  • Verify parts are within specified geometric tolerance and in compliance with engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Collaborate and interface with Manufacturing, Quality and Engineering , Management and Planning to meet on-time delivery schedules.
  • Assist in continuous improvement of procedures and methods with a mind toward efficiency.
  • Create, document, and maintain formal company documents, such as results, procedures, inspection plans, system work instructions.
  • Develop fixturing concepts and work with the mechanical design team to facilitate implementation.
  • Support sales group with estimates for quoting as needed.
  • Assist with training others in the use of equipment and processes
REQUIRED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:
  • High School Diploma, preferably from a technical high school. Associate degree preferred.
  • 5 years of related industry experience
  • 4 years of experience programming and operating CMM equipment (Brown & Sharpe, Leitz and/or Zeiss preferred), experience with Zeiss CALYPSO and/or Hexagon Metrology PC-DMIS/QUINDOS software is a plus
  • Thorough understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) in accordance with ASME/ANSI Y14.5
  • Expert skill level for reading and interpreting technical drawings, customer specifications, working with 3D solid CAD models, and strong math skills
  • Experience using manual measuring tools such as dial indicators, calipers, micrometers, depth micrometers, profilometers, optical comparators.
  • Working knowledge of lean manufacturing practices with a strong commitment to safety and precision-level quality.
  • Highly organized, detail oriented with strong ownership, accountability for technical issues and challenges.
  • Strong computer aptitude, ability to use MS Word and Excel
  • Driven to achieve with the ability to take initiative, and flexible with shifting priorities.
