Cloud Software Engineer 3 (TS/SCI with Full Scope Polygraph)
Annapolis, United States | Posted on 10/28/2026
Location: Annapolis Junction, MD (on-site)
Type: Full-time, permanent
Clearance: Active TS/SCI with current polygraph required
Salary: $199,000 – $238,000, depending on experience
The role
You’ll build, maintain and improve large, complex big-data cloud systems for a mission-focused federal program. You’ll work across the full back end, covering data processing, analytics and indexing, as a hands‑on engineer and technical expert in Hadoop, distributed computing and information retrieval. You’ll work on your own and as part of a team, and help shape system design decisions from system level down to individual software components.
What you’ll do
- Design, develop and test cloud-based information retrieval and big-data processing systems, mainly in Java.
- Build and manage complex MapReduce analytics workflows.
- Write code that works with distributed file systems, BigTable-style data stores and distributed coordination frameworks.
- Architect solutions for processing and retrieving very large volumes of data efficiently.
- Debug and tune distributed computing frameworks, and install and manage multi-node cloud environments.
- Review and test software against design requirements, document results and resolve software problem reports.
- Advise on hardware/software trade-offs, software reuse, and when to use commercial or government off-the-shelf products (COTS/GOTS) instead of building new.
- Lead one or more development tasks: delegate work, monitor performance and ensure quality control of all software.
- Act as the team’s subject matter expert on Hadoop and cloud computing.
- Recommend new technologies, process improvements and documentation standards.
What you’ll need
Experience and education
- 12 years of software engineering on programs of similar scope and complexity, including at least 4 years on big-data cloud or distributed computing programs.
- A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
- 4 extra years of cloud software engineering on similar big-data systems can replace the degree.
- A master’s in Computer Science or a related field counts for 2 years of experience.
- Cloudera Certified Hadoop Developer certification counts for 1 year of cloud experience.
Cloud and distributed computing (minimum experience)
- 2 years of cloud or distributed computing information retrieval.
- 1 year writing code that interacts with a cloud BigTable implementation.
- 1 year writing code that interacts with a cloud distributed file system.
- 1 year building complex MapReduce analytics.
- 1 year writing code that interacts with cloud distributed coordination frameworks.
- 1 year architecting cloud computing solutions.
- 1 year debugging cloud-based distributed computing frameworks.
- 1 year managing multi-node cloud installations.
Technical skills
- Object-oriented design and programming: Java, Eclipse or a similar IDE, Maven, RESTful web services.
- Distributed technologies: YARN, J2EE, MapReduce, Zookeeper, HDFS, HBase, JMS, concurrent programming.
- Ingesting and parsing varied data formats: XML, JSON, CSV, binary formats, sequence and map files, Avro.
- Aspect-oriented design and development.
- JVM memory management and Java application profiling.
- UNIX/Linux, CentOS and Red Hat.
- Configuration management tools such as Subversion, ClearQuest or Razor.
Network operations
- Utility computing, network management, virtualization (VMware or VirtualBox) and cloud computing.
- Installing and managing distributed systems across multiple nodes using Python, CFEngine, Bash, Ruby or similar.
Information assurance
- Securing cloud and distributed applications with firewalls, PKI certificates, server authentication and corporate authentication services.
SIGINT
- Experience with at least one SIGINT collection discipline: FORNSAT, CABLE, terrestrial/microwave, overhead or ELINT.
- Geolocation, emitter identification and signal applications.
- Joint program collection platforms, dataflow architectures and signals characterization analysis.
