Job summary

Expedia Group in San Jose seeks a Principal Software Development Engineer to architect our Cloud Platform. You will drive cell-based architecture, define scalable Kubernetes strategy, and raise reliability and observability standards across the organization.

You will also own FinOps strategy, cost visibility, and developer workflow improvements, building agent-friendly infrastructure and shared platform services to support global travel experiences.

Qualifications

• Extensive professional software development experience designing, building, and operating large-scale cloud-native distributed systems on Kubernetes.
• Ownership of critical services or multi-service platforms including system design, API design, data modeling, deployment, and operations.
• Deep expertise with at least one major public cloud provider and core platform technologies (compute, networking, storage, service discovery, security, observability, CI/CD).
• Ability to make high-impact architectural decisions and guide multiple teams toward long-term technical direction.
• Familiarity with AI-driven systems and applying AI/ML concepts to cloud or platform environments.
• Deep knowledge of observability patterns (OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, tracing).
• Expert-level understanding of Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Pulumi) and CI/CD at scale.
• Proficiency in Go, Rust, or similar languages used in modern platform engineering.

Responsibilities

• Lead architectural evolution toward a Cell-Based Architecture for scalable cloud platforms.
• Modernize Kubernetes and infrastructure, including multi-cluster management and service mesh.
• Harden reliability and observability with SRE standards, automated incidents, and SLO/SLI management.
• Own cloud economics and FinOps tooling to tie spend to business value.
• Support developer workflows with agent-friendly infrastructure and standardized Dev Containers.
