Job summary

Subway Group in the United States is seeking a Cloud Database Engineer to administer and optimize cloud databases across AWS and Azure. You will provision, secure, and optimize relational and non-relational services at scale, partnering with development and architecture teams.

You will design HA/DR configurations, tune performance, and enforce strict security standards while contributing to runbooks and change processes. Strong Terraform and Azure SQL expertise are required.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of database administration experience in an enterprise environment.
• 8+ years of Windows system administration.
• 3+ years of Microsoft SQL Server experience.
• 3+ years designing and testing HA/DR configurations.
• 3+ years using Terraform to provision cloud database services.
• Strong hands-on experience with Azure SQL Database.
• Experience with database performance tuning and index design.
• Experience applying AI/ML tools to database performance optimization (preferred).

Responsibilities

• Provision, configure, and manage cloud database services including Azure SQL Database.
• Design and implement high-availability and disaster recovery configurations.
• Monitor performance and tune queries and indexes to remove bottlenecks.
• Enforce database security standards including encryption, access controls, and auditing.
• Manage backup, restore, and point-in-time recovery; conduct DR tests.
• Collaborate on schema design, capacity planning, and migrations.
• Develop and maintain runbooks, standards, and change management procedures.
• Evaluate emerging cloud database technologies and propose improvements.
• Coach Infrastructure teams on AD and vulnerability remediation.

About the Role:

This position is responsible for administering and optimizing Subway’s cloud database platforms across AWS and Azure. The Cloud Database Engineer will provision and manage relational and non‑relational database services, ensure high availability and disaster recovery readiness, optimize query and system performance, and enforce database security standards. They will work closely with application development, cloud engineering, and architecture teams to support Subway’s data infrastructure at scale.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

• Provision, configure, and manage cloud database services including Azure SQL Database.
• Design and implement high‑availability and disaster recovery configurations for all database platforms.
• Monitor database performance; identify and resolve bottlenecks through query tuning and index optimization.
• Enforce database security standards including encryption at rest and in transit, access controls, and audit logging.
• Manage database backup, restoration, and point‑in‑time recovery procedures; conduct regular DR tests.
• Collaborate with application and architecture teams on schema design, capacity planning, and migrations.
• Develop and maintain database runbooks, standards documentation, and change management procedures.
• Evaluate emerging cloud database technologies and provide recommendations for platform improvements.
• Coach Infrastructure colleagues on Active Directory and vulnerability remediation best practices.

• 5+ years of database administration experience in an enterprise environment.
• 8+ years of experience with Windows system administration.
• 3+ years of experience with Microsoft SQL Server.
• 3+ years of experience designing and testing HA/DR configurations for production database systems.
• 3+ years using Terraform to provision and manage cloud database services.
• Strong hands‑on experience with Azure SQL Database.
• Experience with database performance tuning, query optimization, and index design.
• Proficiency with Terraform for provisioning and managing cloud database infrastructure (required).
• Experience applying AI/ML tools to database performance optimization, anomaly detection, or query analysis (required).
• Bachelor’s degree in Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
• People Management: No | Department: Tech for Technology | Reports To: Director, Cloud Engineering & Database | Location: USA | Scope: Global | Travel: Less than 10%.

Compensation: The base pay range for this role is $XX annually

Pay within this range will be determined in good faith based on job‑related factors, which may include skills, experience, education/training, location, and internal equity.
