Job summary

Government of the Virgin Islands seeks a Clinical Therapist to provide assessments, treatments, psychotherapy, case management, and referrals across a broad client base, including severely mentally ill and those with adjustment issues.

Job description

Under the general supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Behavioral Health or designee, this position provides assessments, treatments, psychotherapy, case management and referrals to a broad range of clients, including those which are severely mentally ill and those dealing with adjustment issues. Clinical Therapist supports the client’s physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing, works directly with clients to actively listen to problems and concerns, and suggest healthy and productive coping methods.

Incumbent is required to work independently with minimal supervision, use initiative, and exercise sound judgement in carrying out responsibilities in accordance with established departmental, local, and federal guidelines. Work is reviewed through meetings, conferences, and approaches taken to handle caseloads.

This position requires a confidential relationship to a policymaker.

• Assesses patient progress and modifies treatment programs; accordingly, communicates with and counsel family members as appropriate.
• Identifies, examines, and treats mental health and emotional issues and disorders.
• Conducts regular appointments with clients who wish to converse with a mental health professional.
• Provides crisis intervention in situations requiring immediate clinical treatment in the office and community.
• Documents therapy in accordance with policies and procedures regarding medical records; implements and adheres to policies that ensure patient confidentiality (HIPPA).
• Implements various treatments and protocols to provide guidance and appropriately address client situations.
• Assesses client situations and provide proper ongoing treatments continually.
• Educates and involves family members or other loved ones in the treatment process when necessary.
• Records and maintains adequate notes about client visits. Refers clients to outside sources or agencies that can better address their needs when required.
• Maintains the strictest confidentiality of every client situation.
• Conduct presentations on various topics when needed. Provide support to outreach initiatives when needed.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Master's degree in mental health counseling, psychology, social work, or a related field, supplemented by two (2) years of clinical experience.

FACTOR 2- SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

General supervision is received from the Program Director or higher-level officer. Incumbent is required to work independently with minimal supervision, use initiative, and exercise sound judgement in carrying out responsibilities. Work is reviewed through meetings, conferences, and approaches taken to handle caseloads.

FACTOR 3- GUIDELINES

Guidelines consist of federal, local, and departmental policies and procedures.

FACTOR 4- COMPLEXITY

Work entails planning, collaborating, and care coordination. Incumbent uses clinically sound independent judgment to carry out the work, set priorities and objectives, and meet deadlines. Work also involves assisting in the application process, information about eligibility, case consultation and referrals to the elderly concerning entailment, appealing denials, and terminations, assessing, and evaluating in identifying available services; seeking and offering extension services to prospective clients; coordinating client services, intervention to minimally complex cases involving complicated social, physical, and emotional problems.

The purpose of work is to perform assessments, evaluations, and service plans to provide support services management and coordination to clients.

Contacts are clientele, co-workers, other agencies, and private organizations.

Contacts are made to obtain information, provide extended services to targeted client populations, networking, and collaborating with community resources to facilitate case management.

Work is basically sedentary but at times requires fieldwork to conduct home visits, client assessments, crisis response, and customer satisfaction surveys.

Work is performed in an office setting. Some travel is required to conduct fieldwork.
