Job summary

UNC Health seeks a Nursing Assistant I to support the Rex 4 West unit in Raleigh, NC. The person assists professionals in patient care, transports patients and equipment, sets up rooms, and handles clerical and data-entry tasks on the unit.

This fast-paced setting supports a diverse patient population on telemetry and acute care overflow. Qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, NC Nursing Assistant I and BLS certifications, and fluency in English.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; higher-level degree may satisfy.
• Nursing Assistant I certification in NC (DHHS) and BLS required.
• Fluency in English with basic computer skills.

Responsibilities

• Assists physicians and other health care providers with routine examinations and procedures, and procures equipment and supplies.
• Critically reviews patient care documentation and reports changes to RN or physician.
• Performs clerical tasks: organize workload, greet visitors, review and transcribe orders, maintain records, and conduct quality audits.
• Provides clinical support including cleaning, equipment maintenance, restocking, transport of patients, supplies, and specimens.
• Delivers direct patient care per plan of care: bathing, dressing, feeding, ambulation, vitals, and specimen collection as needed.
• Reinforces patient teaching and distributes education materials.

4 West is a dynamic 29-bed unit specializing in telemetry and acute care overflow. This fast-paced and highly collaborative unit specializes in caring for a diverse patient population including but not limited to: general and thoracic post-operative patients, cardiovascular patients requiring drip management for rate control, and cardiac medical patients managing acute exacerbations and unstable angina.

Summary

Responsible for assisting the professional caregiver in the delivery of patient care, transporting patient and/or equipment, setting up and maintaining patient rooms and performing a wide range of clerical, transcription, and maintenance of the patient care unit desk area functions.

Responsibilities

• Assists physicians and other health care providers with routine examinations and procedures, as well as procurement of equipment and supplies.
• Critically reviews patient care documentation making note of any significant changes in the patient's condition and make an immediate report to a registered nurse or physician.
• Provides a variety of clerical tasks to include but not limited to organizing and prioritizing workload, greeting and directing visitors, researching information as requested by nurses and physicians, reviewing orders for logic and clarity, revising orders as requested by the nurse, answering the telephone/ patient call lights, transcribing physician orders, and maintaining medical records. Performs routine quality assurance audits, safety checks, and inventory of supplies. Provides administrative and clerical support including PI audits and data entry.
• Provides clinical support assistance to include, but not limited to, cleaning the work area, maintaining office equipment, troubleshooting common software and hardware problems, changing linens, checking supply inventory, re-stocking supplies, transporting patients/ supplies/ specimens, and assisting in the orientation of new employees and students.
• Provides direct personal care to patients as outlined in plan of care activities such as bathing, dressing, feeding, assisting with ambulation. Measures and records vital signs, and patient height and weight. May be responsible for specimen collection, skin preps/scrubs, catheter care, capillary blood glucose checks, simple wound care, range of motion exercises, and/or postural drainage.
• Reinforces routine teaching given to patients by the registered nurse or physician and document patient understanding of instructions. Distributes patient education materials at the request of patients and/or health care providers

• Must be fluent in verbal and written English language. Capability to develop computer skills if not competent.
