Job summary

The South Dakota Department of Corrections is hiring a clinical psychologist to supply comprehensive psychological services for male and female offenders in line with the department’s mission. Occasional travel to DOC facilities across the state is required.

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in psychology and be licensed or license-eligible in South Dakota; corrections experience is preferred. This part-time position offers a pathway to meaningful work within the state's public safety

This position within the clinical services team serves an important role by providing comprehensive psychological services for male and female offenders in a manner that is consistent with the goals and the mission statement of the South Dakota Department of Corrections.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• providing professional psychological services to offenders to include formal and informal mental health evaluations, diagnostic assessments, and clinical interventions;
• providing group services, individual therapy, and crisis intervention;
• assisting with screening and classification as needed;
• overseeing cases of competency restoration;
• close collaboration with members of the the Risk Reduction team;
• using standardized tools (such as the VRAG-R and the PCL:SV) to conduct evaluations related to level of risk, violence, and psychopathy;
• providing recommendations to institutional and parole staff for high risk offenders upon reentry
• assisting with assessment pertaining to both emergency and non-emergency transfer for offenders experiencing acute mental health needs;
• participating in determination of eligibility for services (such as those pertaining to intellectual disability);
• working with educational staff in the formulation of Individualized Education Programs for some offenders, as well as diagnosis of learning disabilities (such as dyslexia)
• providing clinical direction, education, and training to non-clinical correctional staff in mental health care and treatment of offenders;
• working with other behavioral staff in the formation and implementation of behavior management and treatment plans;
• providing direct clinical supervision to psychology interns, when applicable;
• documenting in an accurate and timely manner to provide comprehensive offender mental health records;
• promotion of and accountability for the safety and security of the clinical and correctional environment through conscientious observations, and sensitive item contraband control;
• serving as a member of a multi-disciplinary team that addresses situations involving offenders with complex needs.

The services listed above will involve occasional travel to DOC facilities across the state

Licenses and Certifications:

• Applicant must possess a doctoral degree from an accredited institution in the field of psychology, and must be licensed or license-eligible in the State of South Dakota

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working with corrections-involved clients or within a correctional setting is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• ability to provide professional behavioral health treatment to offenders;
• ability to professionally and accurately assess, evaluate, and diagnose, using evidence-based tools
• ability to work with special populations within corrections, including offenders with sex offenses, offenders with developmental/intellectual disabilities, violent offenders, etc.
• excellent written and verbal communication skills;
• excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across facility programs and with external agencies;
• ability to work independently and to efficiently handle competing priorities;
• ability to provide comprehensive clinical documentation;

Conditions of Employment:

The SD DOC is committed to a work environment free from illegal drugs and alcohol. All job offers are contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation, urine drug screen (UDS) and the candidate's ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

Individuals selected for the position will have the opportunity to carry Oleoresin Capsicum (OC/pepper spray) if desired. If OC spray is carried, the staff carrying OC spay will be required to have direct (level 1) exposure during the training program. Individuals selected for the position must successfully complete a written and practical self-defense exam and successfully complete CPR to AHA guidelines - this includes successful completion of the practical/hands on portion as well as the written exam. Selected individuals must possess the physical ability to successfully complete the practical self-defense exam, which involves the following:

• lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;
• stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;
• use arms, palms of hands, and feet to deliver blows;
• withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;
• rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;
• get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions.

Additionally, TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire.

This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.

This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
