Job Function Summary

Involves all aspects of the medication use process, including procurement, prescribing, compounding, dispensing, storage of medications, administration and monitoring. Partners with physicians and other clinicians to provide treatments and advice to patients, record patient history relating to medication use and ensures the safe and secure storage of medications and related supplies. Advises physicians in determining the best possible treatments for specific diseases, stays current on pharmacy regulations, treatments and developments in research and design. Pharmacists are the experts on drug therapy and the primary health professionals who optimize use of medication for the benefit of the patients. Meets educational needs of patients, healthcare team, students and residents. Ensures adherence to regulatory and fiscal requirements.

Scope
  • Provides direct supervision typically to professionals or skilled technical employees. Functions as advisor to unit and administration. Analyzes and resolves problems, interprets policies and demonstrates solid subject matter knowledge.
  • Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action.
  • Supervises staff to assure accountability and stewardship of department resources in compliance with departmental goals.
  • Provides supervision to pharmacists and technical support staff. Responsible for staff scheduling, timekeeping, training, goal setting, and performance evaluations.
Responsibilities
  • Pharmacist Leadership & Patient Care: Represents the department in interactions with Health System personnel, community groups, other healthcare organizations, and through participation on committees, task forces, etc., as appropriate.
  • Coordinates problem‑solving efforts with patient care providers to assure service and quality standards.
  • Responds to patients, parents, and visitors by assuring that services are provided in a timely manner with courtesy and compassion within a positive environmental setting.
  • Monitors the departmental quality assurance program and facilitates response/solution to quality assurance issues.
  • Assures continuity of department by coordinating the pharmacist/technical support.
  • Participates in development of departmental policies/procedures and goals/objectives consistent with those of the Health System and Campus organizations.
  • Organizes and executes regular pharmacist meetings including agendas, minutes, and scheduling.
  • Develops pharmacist schedule, as directed.
  • Develops scholarly and research projects in collaboration with staff pharmacists and providers.
  • Communicates with all department members, provides information and updates on Health System/department activities, and reports on key issues.
  • Establishes departmental standards and ensures employees are informed of compliance expectations.
  • Administers administrative and personnel policies of the Health System consistently.
  • Monitors employee performance, assists with formal performance appraisal.
  • Creates a work environment with training opportunities and promotes teamwork.
  • Provides guidance and counseling to personnel, facilitating conflict resolution.
  • Serves as a role model with honesty, integrity, fairness, and promotes teamwork.
  • Maintains an open‑door policy, participates in interdepartmental coordination, and applies sound analysis before decision making.
  • Plans resource needs, operational problems, and technological trends; develops plans to address them.
  • Assesses service demand and coordinates staffing, space utilization, equipment functioning, and support services.
  • Establishes and evaluates work‑system design, standards, and protocols to enhance productivity.
  • Develops long‑term plans of department services and programs.
  • Adheres to all Health System and departmental standards, philosophies, and missions.
  • Assesses drug therapy, determines appropriateness of prescribed therapy, optimizes drug selection, recommends changes to achieve desired outcomes, and collaborates with patients and prescribers to resolve problems.
  • Performs mandatory duties as a Staff II & Lead Pharmacist and other assigned duties.
Qualifications
  • Doctor of Pharmacy Degree (PharmD).
  • PGY1 Pharmacy Residency or equivalent experience.
  • Three (3) years of experience as a licensed pharmacist in a hospital pharmacy or equivalent education and experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of pharmaceutical theory, pharmacy regulations, research, and acute care application.
  • Knowledge of pharmacy, medical center, and UC policies on medication storage, safety, patient privacy, and treatment; familiarity with federal and state laws.
  • Leadership skills in training and guiding employees in clinical service lines.
  • Ability to prioritize effectively, manage multiple projects, and identify productivity inefficiencies and compliance risks.
  • Strong communication, critical thinking, and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in clinical documentation applications and pharmacy database technology, and ability to train others.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PGY2 Residency Training or equivalent experience.
  • Advanced Certification (BCPS, BCCCP, CDE).
Licenses
  • Registered Pharmacist in the State of California.
  • Basic Life Support certification.
