Job summary

Mount Sinai Health System is seeking an Ophthalmic Technician to assist Eye Center physicians by performing diagnostic tests and supporting patients through the evaluation process. The role involves screening patients, preparing charts, arranging lab and imaging studies, and communicating procedures to patients and families.

The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and at least 1 year of experience as a Medical Office Assistant or similar role.

Responsibilities

  • Performs preliminary screening examinations for physician review including central and peripheral visual field tests, ocular motility tests, color vision tests, pupil tests, tonometry and related tests.
  • Directs patient flow, obtains data for charts, screens patients, arranges tests and admissions per physician, explains procedures to patients and families.
  • Calibrates and maintains ophthalmic instruments such as bio-microscopes, lensometer, keratometer, tangent screen, slit lamp and tonometers.
  • Sterilizes and sets up instruments for ophthalmic procedures and assists with minor surgery and laser treatments.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Description

The Ophthalmic Technician assists an Eye Center Physician and other technical support personnel to perform diagnostics tests necessary for evaluation of patient eye problem.


Responsibilities

1. Performs preliminary screening examinations for physician reviewincluding, but not limited to, central and peripheral visual field tests;ocular motility tests; color vision tests; pharmacological pupil tests;tonometry, tonography and tensilon tonography tests to determine intraocularpressure and pupil testing for size, equality and reaction prior to dilation.

2. Directs the flow of patients examined by an Eye Center physician;obtains medical and personal data for patient charts; screens patients forconditions excluding ocular examination; arranges for laboratory and othertests, ophthalmic photography, outpatient studies and patient admissions andsurgery as requested by physician; alleviates patient and family concerns byexplaining diagnostic procedures and method of treatment.

3. Calibrates and maintains all instruments used including, but not limitedto bio-microscopes, lensometer, keratometer, tangent screen, slit lamp andtonometers; cleans and stocks consultation rooms and microbiology laboratorywith drugs and other supplies as needed.

4. Sterilizes and sets up instruments for ophthalmic surgical procedures;assists with minor office surgery, laser treatments and operating room surgeryas required.

5. Performs other duties as assigned.

Compensation

The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $28.2087 - $37.2132 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
