Job summary

UNM Hospital in Albuquerque, NM seeks a Clinical Nutritionist to plan, develop, and conduct all aspects of a hospital nutrition program, including standards for patient care and therapeutic diets.

Responsibilities include supervising staff, developing menus, educating staff, maintaining records, ensuring quality and patient safety, and participating in committees.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred.
  • Licensed Dietitian or Nutritionist in NM with credentials; CPR/BLS within 30 days.
  • Minimum 3 years of directly related experience.

  • Maintain required records and prepare reports.
  • Develop or assist with policies and procedures for efficient operation.
  • Assist in menu development for nutritional adequacy and therapeutic diets.
  • Educate staff on nutrition topics and health science.

  • Perform related duties as required.
  • Develop and administer the division's budget; monitor expenditures.
  • Follow patient safety policies and improve safety practices.
  • Attend meetings and participate in hospital committees.

Position Summary

Plan, organize, develop, and conduct all aspects of a clinical nutrition program in accordance with applicable regulations. Develop standards for patient care; oversee quality assurance and nutrition protocols to ensure optimal patient care. Serve as therapeutic nutritionist. Coordinate design and implementation of nutrition education plans. Maintain working knowledge of current Cbord systems to assure nutritional adequacy of patient meals served and adherence to therapeutic diets. Ensures adherence to Hospital and Departmental Policies and Procedures. Patient care assignment may include: Neonate, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult and Geriatric age groups.

Detailed Responsibilities
  • SUPERVISION - Oversee the supervision of assigned personnel, which includes work allocation, training, and problem resolution; evaluate performance, and make recommendations for personnel actions; motivate employees to achieve peak productivity and performance
  • RECORDS - Maintain required records; compile and prepare scheduled and periodic reports
  • PROCEDURES - Develop or assist with the development and implementation of policies and procedures consistent with those of the organization to ensure efficient and safe operation of the department
  • MENU - Assist in menu development for nutritional adequacy and designing therapeutic diets. Maintain up to date working knowledge of UNMH Cbord systems
  • EDUCATION - Develop or assist in the development of educational programs; teaches nutrition and other health science topics to staff and other professionals
  • QUALITY - Develop or assist with performance improvement plans and activities
  • RELATED WORK - Perform related duties and responsibilities as required
  • BUDGET - Develop and administer the division's annual budget; monitor and approve expenditures
  • PATIENT SAFETY 1 - Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols
  • PATIENT SAFETY 2 - Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes
  • PATIENT SAFETY 3 - Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk
  • PATIENT SAFETY 4 - Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner
  • PATIENT SAFETY 5 - Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may "not seem right"
  • COMMITTEES AND MEETINGS - Attend clinical, technical and administrative meetings; participate in committee functions; participate in hospital-wide activities and committees within the scope of this position or as directed

Physical Conditions:

Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. May require walking or standing to a significant degree or requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or may require working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of materials is negligible.
