Job summary

Trinity Health's St. Joseph Mercy Oakland in Michigan is seeking a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) to lead and collaborate with the care team, applying advanced nursing practice in Practice, Quality Improvement, Research, Education and Leadership.

The CNS will practice under ANA standards, participate in shared governance, and support magnet designation efforts while advancing patient safety and evidence-based care.

Qualifications

• Master of Science in Nursing required.

Description:

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is a collaborative member/leader of the care team and is accountable for practicing both the art and science of advanced practice nursing using advanced knowledge and clinical expertise in the areas of Practice, Quality Improvement, Research, Consultation, Education and Leadership, as prescribed by the American Nurses Association (ANA) Standards of Practice and Professional Performance. In addition, the CNS is accountable to practice in accordance with the standards established/endorsed by St Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) leadership and by external regulators and accreditation agencies. The CNS actively promotes SJMO nursing and the nursing profession, and supports advancing practice in fulfillment of the SJMO Quality Plan for Nursing. The CNS is an active participant and support to SJMO in all activities related to the achievement of the Magnet Hospital Program Designation. The CNS at SJMO has authority, responsibility and accountability for nursing practice through the formal nursing shared governance structure, and is expected to abide by the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses.

Minimum Education, Licensure / Certification and Experience Required.

A. Education

• Master of Science in Nursing.
• Graduate Degree in Nursing Education or Certificate for Nursing Education preferred.

B. Licensure / Certification

• Current RN licensure in the State of Michigan.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred.
• Certification by a nationally recognized nursing organization is preferred.
• Membership in a professional nursing organization is preferred.

Minimum Education, Licensure / Certification and Experience Required.

• Excellent customer service orientation skills necessary in order to deal effectively with various levels of hospital personnel, outside customers and community groups. Able to demonstrate principles of Relationship-based Care.
• Demonstrates responsiveness to needs of patients, other care team members, and self. Leadership and management skills necessary to foster the growth and development of direct reports, motivate individuals and teams, and resolve problems in a diplomatic professional manner.
• Interpersonal and relationship management skills necessary to effectively develop and foster collaborative working relationships with all levels of staff/management/leadership, influence results, and garner support.
• Ability to use and effectively integrate positive communication approaches to meet diverse patient and staff needs, optimize resources, and adapt care processes as needed.
• Advanced knowledge of continuous quality improvement methods including data collection, analysis and interpretation.
• Ability to use critical thinking, logic and reasoning to identify and present strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to complex situations.
• Ability to assess, diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate patient care for complex and complicated problems using critical thinking skills, and advanced knowledge with emphasis on patient safety and evidence-based practice.
• Excellent customer service and advanced interpersonal skills necessary in order to interact effectively with various levels of hospital personnel, outside customers and community groups.
• Knowledge of principles of adult learning and motivational theory for adults. Ability to serve as a teacher, mentor, and coach to patients, students, new nurses, peers, other colleagues, and staff, to advance the profession of nursing and optimize patient outcomes.
• Clinical expertise in a specialty or sub-specialty of nursing practice. Basic Life Support (BLS) instructor and/or faculty status required within 6 months of hire. Advanced Life Support instructor and/or faculty status required for areas of clinical practice that staff certification is required within 6 mon-1year of hire.

D. Experience

• Three years in clinical nursing practice in Adult General Medical/Surgical and/or Adult Critical Care/Emergency and/or Maternal Child Health and/or Surgical/Peri-operative area or other specialty nursing practice experience required.
• Previous educational experience as a Clinical Nurse Specialist, preceptor, unit educator, central nursing education role or academic clinical instructor required.
