General Summary

Plans, implements, and evaluates educational programs for specified area(s); in collaboration with Nurse Manager and utilizing information from strategic priorities, assesses and utilizes the Standards of Practice for Nursing Professional Development to develop educational offerings. Serves as a resource and coordinator of education for assigned area(s) of responsibility and creates a supportive environment to promote a strong learning culture.

Educator Responsibilities
  • Responsible for meeting the learning needs of staff within assigned areas, including emergent, short‑term, intermittent, and long‑range, based on changes within the organization.
  • In collaboration with manager(s), assess learning needs of staff within units/departments assigned and make recommendations for educational programs, utilizing a variety of teaching strategies and audiovisuals.
  • Design and revise educational activities to facilitate behavior change.
  • Integrate cultural competence into learning activities and facilitate the application of appropriate theories of nursing and other sciences to improve quality patient care.
  • Work in collaboration with the Professional Nursing Practice Department to complete and submit the ANA continuing education contact hour packet for educational programs offered at Shore Health System.
  • Work in conjunction with unit preceptors and unit manager to develop a competency‑based orientation individualized to new hires assigned to unit(s)/department(s).
  • Maintain a flexible schedule to meet learning needs of staff on all shifts.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness and outcomes of educational endeavors.
  • Provide assistance to learners in identification of learning needs, including cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains.
  • Facilitate the adult learning process, creating a climate conducive to learning and a good relationship with learners, promoting a strong learning culture.
  • Monitor safety practices and recognize trends in conjunction with manager to promote patient safety.
  • Serve as a coach or mentor for less experienced staff/colleagues.
Facilitator Responsibilities
  • Provide assistance to learners in identification of learning needs.
  • Facilitate the adult learning process, creating a climate conducive to learning and a good relationship with learners.
  • Monitor safety practices and recognize trends in conjunction with manager to promote patient safety.
  • Serve as a coach or mentor for less experienced staff/colleagues.
Change Agent Responsibilities
  • Facilitate initiation, adoption, and adjustment to change initiatives.
  • Work with leadership team to keep staff updated on changes in regulatory requirements.
  • Serve on key committees to identify educational needs of nursing staff; chair unit‑based Education Council and serve as a standing member on Education Council.
Consultant/Clinical Expertise Responsibilities
  • Network within and outside the Department of Nursing, collaborating within and across interdisciplinary teams.
  • Coach and provide feedback to improve staff performance.
  • Apply clinical process and education of patients and families, including assessing needs, formulating an educational plan, implementing the plan, and revising as needed.
  • Proficiently utilize a variety of educational approaches, including one‑on‑one instruction, group classes, train‑the‑trainer, and audio‑visual presentations.
  • Educate staff to be unit trainers for new equipment, policies, and procedures, and provide a framework for training/education.
  • Enlist staff experts to help deliver education.
  • Serve as a resource to other departments as necessary, as the clinical expert.
  • Demonstrate the ability to problem‑solve and provide feedback to individuals.
Research/Evidence‑Based Practice Responsibilities
  • Facilitate evidence‑based practice and utilization of nursing research to improve and advance nursing practice; promote a culture of inquiry.
  • Educate nurses on the research process and its impact on healthcare.
  • Incorporate research and EBP findings into educational activities.
Leadership Responsibilities
  • Support Organization and Nursing Strategic Plan; encourage and support staff to advance professionally through membership in professional organizations, national certifications, etc., and to continue life‑long learning through educational programs and degree programs.
  • Maintain required documentation and record‑keeping system.
  • Evaluate overall educational program effectiveness.
  • Provide input into the annual budget.
  • Develop educational and professional practice goals and objectives annually and report on progress.
  • Strive to achieve excellence of service as described in the CARE Commitments.
  • Respond to Shore Health System codes: Code Red, Code Pink, Code D, Code Green, Code Blue.
  • Ensure honest behavior in all matters.
  • Comply with all Federal and State laws and regulations.

  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Education, Experience, and Licensing
  • Licensed to practice registered nursing in the State of Maryland.
  • Minimum of 5 years clinical nursing experience, including 2 years of specialization experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master of Science in Nursing preferred.
  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross BLS Certification required.
  • Meet all applicable federal, state, and local professional requirements.
