Job summary

Qualifications

  • Proficiency with computers and EHRs (CPSI/Evident preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Perform licensed laboratory procedures across Chemistry, Hematology, Immunohematology, Serology and Microbiology.
  • Perform phlebotomy and arterial blood gas collections.
  • Train other personnel and provide input in staff evaluations.
  • Assist the laboratory director with validation, QC and nursing/physician support.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and maintain accreditation standards (CAP/CLIA/AHCA/TJC).

POSITION PURPOSE

This position serves as a laboratory technician generalist; works towards implementing the departmental goals of standardization, realignment, and maintaining 100% proficiency in the CAP, CLIA, AHCA, CMS and TJC accreditations; Has responsibility for technically performing the full range of clinical laboratory procedures (as licensed) including Chemistry, Hematology, Immunohematology (Blood Bank), Serology, and Microbiology; and performs Phlebotomy and Arterial Blood Gas collections.

Performs variety of laboratory tests, many of which are complex, involving numerous steps and techniques, and requires the use of professional judgment. Professional application of the principles, theories and techniques of medical technology are used to produce consistently reliable test results which aid the physician in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Trains other personnel and provides input in job evaluations. Assist laboratory administrative director in performance of general lab duties to include validation, quality control, nursing and physician support.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Associate’s Degree in Medical Technology or meets the educational requirements as outlined in Florida Licensure Administrative rule 64B3-5.004 for a laboratory technician.
  2. State of Florida licensed as a clinical laboratory technician in any or all of the areas of Chemistry, Hematology, Serology, Immunohematology and Microbiology.
  3. A minimum of two (2) years of full-time technical experience in licensed specialties to include test interpretation, quality control and instrument maintenance unless hired in a training position.
  4. American Heart Association current BLS certification required.
  5. Strong customer service skills and ability to multi-task while working in a high volume work environment required.
  6. Able to work effectively with team members, supervisors, patients and their families to accomplish team goals.
  7. Ability to plan, organize and perform job associated tasks to completion. Willing to adjust personal schedule to accommodate patient needs.
  8. Demonstrated knowledge of computers and proficiency in the use of an electronic health record system required, CPSI/Evident preferred. Knowledge of web based programs and Microsoft Office suite of products including Outlook, Word and Excel preferred.
  9. Basic computer skills.
  10. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
  1. Ability to read and communicate effectively in English
  2. Ability to speak a relevant second language is a plus.
  3. Strong written and verbal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with customers, medical staff, and hospital staff.
  4. Ability to identify and implement appropriate patient communication strategies and overcome accessibility barriers, as required
  5. Ability to use Language Line or find certified interpreter for interpretation as needed.
WORK ENVIRONMENT / SAFETY
  1. General work area Chemicals: Acids, Caustics and Solvents.
  2. Biohazards: Specimens, Controls, and Bacterial Culture collection devises.
  3. OSHA Category I exposure to infectious diseases and blood and body fluids.
  4. Occasionally subjected to extended or irregular hours
  5. Occasional pressure due to unpredictable situations, emergency or crisis situations, or due to multiple calls and inquiries.
