Job summary

Galaxy Diagnostics, a privately held medical laboratory in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, is seeking a Clinical Laboratory Scientist to perform high-complexity diagnostic testing across microbiology, immunology, and molecular assays. The role reports to the Senior Clinical Lab Scientist II and is full-time in a CLIA-accredited lab.

Qualifications

  • Master of Science degree with minimum 1 year of professional lab experience, or Bachelor of Science with minimum 3 years of experience.
  • MLS/ASCP or MT/ASCP certification preferred.
  • Strong aseptic technique and precise pipetting; accurate recording of results.

Responsibilities

  • Perform microbiological, immunological, and molecular testing using IFA, ELISA, Western Blot, cultures, DNA/RNA extraction, qPCR and ddPCR.
  • Interpret and report assay results; organize, tabulate, analyze, and document results promptly.
  • Maintain reagents, supplies, and equipment per protocols; follow established SOPs and contribute to SOP development.
  • Perform quality control and quality assurance including equipment maintenance and calibration; document QC activities.
  • Ensure specimens are properly recorded, processed, and triaged with chain-of-custody.
  • Collaborate with R&D to optimize and validate assays as needed.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues and meet deadlines; assist customer service with issue resolution.
  • Maintain communication with supervisors and coworkers; contribute to a positive work climate.

Job description

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist is responsible for performing clinical diagnostic testing duties for high complexity, laboratory-developed, microbiological, immunological, and molecular assays within a CLIA-accredited clinical diagnostic laboratory. This is a full-time position that reports to the Senior Clinical Lab Scientist II.

Responsibilities
  • Perform a variety of laboratory procedures utilizing microbiological, immunological, and molecular techniques, including IFA, ELISA, Western Blotting, Cultures, DNA and RNA extraction, quantitative PCR, and digital PCR
  • Apply knowledge of advanced molecular techniques and microbiological procedures to appropriately interpret and report assay results. Organize, tabulate, analyze, report, and document the assay results in a timely and professional manner
  • Ensure that reagents, supplies, and equipment are adequately maintained per company protocols
  • Work using established SOPs and develop new SOPs
  • Perform quality control and quality assurance procedures including routine equipment maintenance and calibration, documentation of quality control, and quality assurance activities
  • Ensure that test specimens are recorded, processed, and triaged appropriately while maintaining "chain-of custody”
  • Collaborate with R&D team to optimize and validate assays as needed
  • Troubleshoot laboratory technical issues and respond to unscheduled deadlines
  • Provide prompt response and help to customer service team in customer issue resolution
  • Develop and maintain relationships through effective and timely communication with supervisors and co-workers
  • Perform other duties as required
Requirements
  • A Master of Science degree plus a minimum of one year of professional laboratory experience, or a Bachelor of Science degree plus a minimum of three years of professional laboratory experience in biology, microbiology, immunology, chemistry, biochemistry, clinical laboratory science (CLS), or related field. Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist [MLS (ASCP) or MT (ASCP)] certification preferred.
  • Excellent aseptic technique, precise pipetting skills, accurate recording of results, and ability to interpret scientific data
  • Attention to detail, flexibility, and ability to multi-task at an advanced level
  • The ability to work independently, outstanding problem-solving skills, and strong teamwork skills
  • Excellent troubleshooting and critical thinking skills
  • Clear vision required for equipment operation and data entry, analysis, and reporting
  • Molecular techniques including PCR, qPCR, droplet digital PCR, DNA Extractions (manual and automated), Immunological techniques including ELISA, IFA, Western Blot, Microscopy
  • Experience with BSL-2 and enhanced BSL-2 laboratory procedures, including microbial culture, mammalian cell culture, BSL-2 biological sample processing, biohazardous specimen shipping
  • Demonstrated track record of strong scientific and laboratory technical skills
  • Excellent planning, execution, and problem-solving skills in laboratory work
  • Strong computer skills and knowledge of clinical laboratory automation, system software, Microsoft applications and laboratory statistics
  • Knowledge of CLIA and HIPAA regulations, OSHA lab safety practices
  • Excellent interpersonal, as well as oral and written communication skills
  • Self-motivation, a strong sense of accountability, willingness to participate in developing and maintaining a strong, positive, and supporting work climate
