Job summary

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, located in Boston, seeks a frontline staff member to manage banking and transactions of research samples for PTL, CMCF. This role supports material management for Clinical Laboratories and the PTL, CMCF, with duties spanning logging, storage, and basic lab procedures.

The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma and some lab experience, with comfort using computers and sterile techniques in a fast-paced setting.

Qualifications

• High school diploma required; laboratory experience preferred.
• Working knowledge of computer systems is desired.
• Ability to follow OSHA and universal precautions in a high-volume lab.

Responsibilities

• Log in research samples for cryopreservation and storage.
• Process samples for cryopreservation and storage.
• Enter sample information into databases and perform searches.
• Retrieve samples and data from other departments as required.
• Catalog and maintain sample inventory in logs and databases.
• Assist with distribution and shipment of samples for protocols.
• Transport samples between facilities as needed.
• Perform low complexity lab procedures with training; support QA checks.

Job description

This job family is the frontline staff responsible for the communication with Clinical staff and researchers concerning the banking and transactions of research samples for the Pasquarello Tissue Laboratory (PTL), CMCF. They also assist with the materials management for the Clinical Laboratories and the PTL, CMCF.

• Logs in research samples for cryopreservation and storage
• Processes research samples for cryopreservation and storage
• Enters sample information into database and performs sample searches
• Retrieves samples and data from other departments, as required
• Catalogs and maintains sample inventory in logs and databases
• Assist with the distribution and shipment of samples for special protocols
• Transports products and samples between Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the Kraft Family Donor Center and DFCI Lab control
• Performs low complexity lab procedures with appropriate training
• Assists other lab staff, as required
• Performs various quality control procedures on equipment. Reports unexpected findings to the appropriate supervisor
• Other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

• Ability to use computers, centrifuges, pipettes, LN2 tanks, microscope and other lab equipment as it becomes available. Extensive work performed under a hood utilizing sterile conditions
• Work in a lab following all OSHA and Safety guidelines as well as utilizing Universal Precautions
• Lab coats and gloves to be worn
• Works in high volume busy lab setting which can be stressful at times
• Handling of blood and bone marrow

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

The position requires a high school diploma. Previous laboratory experience is preferred, and a working knowledge of computer systems is desired.
