Job Requirements

Under minimal supervision, direct and coordinate the work of Clinical Engineering Technicians who repair and maintain medical equipment and radiographic/fluoroscopic equipment, including safety testing, and routine maintenance and repair. Implement departmental related policies and procedures.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
  • 1. Coordinate and direct Clinical Engineering Technicians assigned to the Clinical Engineering department. Works in conjunction with superior to develop work standards. Establishes and implements equipment testing procedures.
    • A. Establishes and monitors work flow; determines work assignments, and assigns staff accordingly; schedules equipment testing and repair activities according to urgency of need; schedules preventative maintenance in accordance with Quality Assurance Plan and without interruption to patient service.
    • B. Provides technical counsel to subordinate staff on codes, standards, maintenance and repair of radiographic equipment.
    • C. Consults with department managers and medical staff regarding equipment operation and problems to obtain sufficient information to expiate the problem in order to minimize the amount of down-time.
  • 2. In conjunction with supervisor, develops, administers, and ensures compliance with quality assurance measures which monitor the consistency and quality of services provided by the Clinical Engineering Technicians. Monitors and enforces The Joint Commission accreditation standards for plant technology and safety management for patient and employee safety.
    • A. Monitors timeliness of equipment inspections to ensure efficient staff responsiveness and reduce equipment down-time;
    • B. Reviews potential safety hazards of equipment regularly, and documents actions taken to eliminate them;
    • C. Performs regular checks of all medical equipment for accuracy and efficiency of operation;
    • D. Reviews and documents acceptance standards violations for newly purchased/rented/leased/loaned equipment under consideration for use in the UMMC.
    • E. Reports statistical data collected and Clinical Engineering's action taken regarding the quality of medical equipment operation and performance to supervisor.
  • 3. As Team Lead, is directly responsible for directing, evaluating and motivating the performance of Clinical Engineering Services Technicians assigned to the Clinical Engineering department.
    • A. Consults on individual performance evaluations to ensure the overall satisfactory performance of the department.
    • B. Establishes clear and concise work procedures and expectations, assessing performance levels by monitoring results and providing positive and constructive feedback.
    • C. Provides on-going staff training and development.
  • 4. In conjunction with supervisor, develops, implements, and assures adherence to clinical engineering practices and general departmental policies and procedures to improve the efficiency of repair service and operating efficiency for Clinical Engineering.
    • A. Insures adherence of staff to policy and procedure, as appropriate.
  • 5. Contacts the various contracted medical equipment service suppliers to resolve problems with equipment operation, arrange for repair and replacement of parts.
  • 6. Recommends equipment purchases and standardization to supervisor based upon history and experience with use of equipment.
  • 7. Assures accurate and efficient maintenance of departmental records and reports, such as, Maintenance Requests, Electrical Safety forms, files and relevant departmental performance statistics in accordance with The Joint Commission, Federal, State and local regulations.
    • A. Communicates information regarding high cost repairs to supervisor, obtaining approval prior to initiating action.
Work Experience Education and Experience
  • 1. Associate's degree in Clinical Engineering Technology, Electronics Technology or a related discipline, or a commensurate combination of education and experience, is required.
  • 2. Five years of technical experience, performing clinical or clinical equipment installation, testing and repair on (all types of medical and related) instrumentation In addition, one year lead worker or supervisory experience, overseeing the work of lower level maintenance workers is desired.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • 1. Knowledge of the principles and practices of electronics or clinical engineering technology as applied to the calibration and repair of clinical equipment and instrumentation is required. Knowledge of industry standards and regulations such as The Joint Commission, National Electrical Code, and OSHA/MOSH, regarding operation and maintenance of x-ray and other medical equipment, and the ability to apply such standards, is required.
  • 2. Ability to demonstrate use and maintenance of medical equipment for training purposes, and to perform calibration, repair and maintenance of medical equipment using specialized test equipment is required.
  • 3. Familiarity with basic anatomy and physiology as applied to the use and operation all types of medical equipment used in clinical areas.
  • 4. Ability to direct, monitor, evaluate, train and motivate the performance of subordinate Clinical Engineering Technicians.
  • 5. Highly effective verbal and written communication skills are required to work with diverse levels of management and clinical staff, external vendors and to supervise employees.
