Job summary

Parkland Health in Dallas is seeking an experienced Biomedical Engineer to provide engineering services for medical and research devices, project management, and technical problem-solving across clinical areas. Responsibilities include device design, equipment procurement oversight, staff education on technologies, and participation in long-term technology planning and budgeting.

Candidates should have a BS in Engineering, five years in clinical engineering, and relevant certifications; MS

  • MS degree preferred in related field.

Responsibilities

  • Provides project management leadership and ensures objectives and deliverables are met.
  • Develops and designs equipment systems in consultation with user groups and partners.
  • Educates medical and technical staff on medical technologies and distributes technology information.
  • Performs assessment of new technologies as needed and supports regulatory compliance.
  • Maintains Clinical Equipment Database to meet regulatory requirements and track PMs/ recalls.

Job description

Primary Purpose

Provides engineering services to medical and research areas including selection, acquisition and service of medical devices, project management, clinical/technical problem-solving, device design and solution of novel system and technical problems.

Education
  • Must have a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Engineering from an accredited university. Degree focus can be in Electrical, Clinical or Biomedical Engineering.
  • Prefer a Master’s of Science degree in a related field.
Experience
  • Must have five years of experience in clinical engineering, preferably in a hospital setting. A related industry, academic setting, or equivalent setting is also acceptable.
  • Must have experience dealing with CE regulatory bodies such as TJC, CMS, TDSHS, CAP, etc.
  • Must have experience managing equipment selection processes to include large scale purchases such as physiological monitors, defibrillators, dialysis machines, MRI, CT, Nuclear Medicine, anesthesia machines, etc.
Equivalent Education and/or Experience
  • May have an equivalent combination of education and experience to substitute for both the education and the experience requirements.
Certification/Registration/Licensure
  • Prefer Certified Bio-Medical Electronic Technician (CBET), Certified Radiology Engineering Specialist (CRES), or Certified Clinical Engineer (CCE) certification.

  • Must be able to demonstrate an expert level knowledge of electronic, mechanical and/or computer engineering design and applications’ principles.

Responsibilities
  • Provides project management leadership through planning, managing, and controlling and reporting on the work performed by individual project teams. Applies Parkland’s project management direction, methodology, and processes to assigned projects, in order to achieve organizational goals. Facilitates the process(s) of developing project objectives and deliverables.
  • Responsible for effective device design and providing novel system and technical problem solutions.
  • Educates medical and technical staff on medical technologies, distributing appropriate technology information to departments.
  • Performs assessment of new technologies as needed.
  • Develops and designs equipment systems in consultation with user groups and strategic partners.
  • Responsible for producing strategic clinical technology 5-10 year plans to integrate local clinical technology needs into CSA, regional, and national purchasing plans.
  • Forecasts medical technology budgets on a 5-10 year life-cycle horizon. In consultation with Facilities PDC, Clinical Engineering department, forecasts maintenance and repair costs for medical equipment. Conducts cost benefit and cost effective analysis of medical technologies.
  • Plans and oversees equipment installations and relocation of medical equipment.
  • Reviews facility construction plans and templates. Reviews startup equipment lists, ensuring evolving compatibility of clinical technologies. Provides facilities development with clinical technical and environmental requirements for technology installation.
  • Develops service contracts, under direction of the manager, to provide information, analysis, projections, assessments, reports, and other forms of customized consultation to key stakeholders of the KP clinical technologies system.
  • Maintains Clinical Equipment Database to meet regulatory compliance, including reviewing preventive maintenance (PM) frequency, PM procedures, database accuracy and tracking alerts/recalls.
