General Description Of The Job Class

Coordinate all phases of nutrition care including nutrition assessment, care planning, monitoring, education, and counseling of hospitalized patients and outpatients in various settings. Perform duties in support of and in compliance with performance improvement plans, JCAHO, and other licensing, accrediting, and regulatory agencies. The Duke University Health System offers career advancement through a clinical ladder program.

Duties And Responsibilities Of This Level
Level I
  • Provide nutrition services and medical nutrition therapy aligned with the patient's medical goals.
  • Evaluate, interpret, monitor, and document the nutritional status and needs of hospitalized patients and outpatients using established standards of care and practice guidelines.
  • Identify and provide age-specific nutrition counseling, considering cultural needs.
  • Develop, review, update, and implement educational materials for patients and professionals.
  • Write orders for diet, supplements, enteral/parenteral nutrition, and laboratory data per hospital policy.
  • Function as part of the clinical interdisciplinary team.
  • Maintain RD status, including continuing education and licensure.
  • Precept dietetic interns and train new clinical staff.
  • Supervise dietetic technicians and contribute to evaluations.
Level II
  • Work in an assigned specialty area, integrating research and education into practice.
  • Act as a liaison and advocate for the profession, sharing new knowledge across disciplines.
Level III
  • Display advanced clinical and technical skills, providing expertise and leadership in a specialty area.
  • Potential specialties include: Student Advisor, Malnutrition Specialist, Adult/Pediatric Nutrition Support, Program Coordinator, etc.
Required Qualifications At This Level

Education: Baccalaureate in Food and Nutrition, Dietetics, Nutritional Sciences, or related field. Completion of a dietetic internship of at least 900 hours under a Registered Dietitian.

Experience: Level I: 1 year in an acute care setting preferred; Level II & III: 5+ years clinical experience or 3+ years with nutrition certification.

Licensure & Certification: RD by the Commission on Dietetic Registration; eligible candidates may be hired with the expectation of registration within 90 days. LDN license by the North Carolina Board of Dietetics and Nutrition.
