Newborn Intensive Care Unit Overview

The Newborn Intensive Care Unit at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU is the area’s largest single‑family room NICU. This 40‑bed Level IV NICU cares for all newborns born preterm or critically ill requiring surgical or medical management. The NICU treats over 500 infants per year that are either born at VCU or transported by our dedicated NICU Ground and Flight Transport Program. Recognized as the First Beacon Unit in the State of Virginia receiving the GOLD distinction, this unit welcomes both new grads and experienced nurses.

Key Responsibilities
  • Facilitate patient flow and coordinate activities and communication for the clinical area nursing unit during assigned shifts.
  • Serve as a resource and leader for patients, staff, health‑care providers, administration and other disciplines.
  • Ensure that patient care is delivered to all patients in an efficient, caring and courteous manner.
  • Follow documented physician/licensed independent provider orders and practice within the boundaries of Virginia nursing regulations.
  • Organize and plan work with input from patients/families, using sound clinical judgment and resources.
  • When applicable, organize work and delegate and supervise others (RN, LPN, Care Partners, Unit Secretaries, etc.).
  • Work designated shifts, days of the week, and/or holidays as required; shift rotations and schedules may be adjusted as necessary.
Required Licensure & Certification
  • Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible compact state.
  • AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent (for continued employment).
Required Experience
  • Minimum of three (3) years of clinical experience.
  • Charge Nurse experience or supervisory experience.
Preferred Experience
  • Academic health‑care experience.
  • Experience with similar patient population in an acute care setting or appropriate area of practice.
Required Education
  • Diploma or Associate’s Degree from a professional nursing program recognized by the state’s Board of Nursing.
  • All registered nurses without a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher) must enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of their start date and complete the program within five years of their start date.
Preferred Education / Certification
  • Certification in specialty area.
  • Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in Nursing from an accredited program.
Physical & Mental Requirements
  • Lifting 50‑100 lbs.
  • Exposure to potentially hazardous and infectious substances.
  • Prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing, reaching (overhead, extensive).
  • Strong recall, reasoning, problem‑solving, hearing, clear speaking, legible writing, reading, logical thinking.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities, intense customer interactions, noisy environment, and frequent change in a fast‑pace environment.
